Im trying to wire up my wipers today and im unsure why there are two 12 v sources.. one from ignitio acc. and one frome fuse block. Can anyone help me out with this. Im a electrical tech but i dont have any schematic of how the switch works its driving me crazy, i cant just put it together. I have to know how it works.

Lets see if I can explain this. From the windshield wiper/washer switch you have 7 wires (this is for a '70 two speed which I believe is the same as a '69).

These four wires go to the wiper motor
Red wire--- 12v for parking the wiper after you turn the switch off
White wire----Low speed power
Blue wire---High speed power
Black wire---Ground wire going back to the wiper switch


Green wire from switch goes to the window washer motor
White/black wire is fused
White/orange is 12v switched from the ignition switch


The wiper motor gets 12v power to run it either at low speed or high speed depending on what switch postion you have chosen. When you turn the wiper off without something inside the wiper motor to cause it to continue to its park position it would stop the wipers on the windshield at the point your turned it off. The extra 12v wire going to the wiper motor provides power to the motor until the wipers come to the park position.
I hope this is correct, if someone else has a better explaination please jump in.

Update. I wires in the wipers and skipped the constant 12v connection. Cruzzar, you were right about the parking voltage. The battery 12v parks the wiper after the car is turned off.. I just didnt feel like running another wire to the swich so now i have to be sure to turn off the wiper swich before i turn off the key or the wipers will stay up, at least until i turn on the ign. again and turn off the swich.

 

I checked the 69 wiring diagram. you're right on the ball here.
booger. the other way round. if you switch off ignition and the wiper stops in it's track you're missing the constant voltage from fusebox.
It seems it's hooked up with the same fuse as reverselight switch (not sure). So check on reverselight. If that doesn't work, check the fuse

Thanks Kalli, i forgot to mention that I was using a ron francis kit fot the car and had never wired in the wipers. SoCal didnt really have any rain since i put the car together.

I did add some female connectors to that wire in case I wanted to hook up the 12v source later on. and the washer line too

 

LOL. the wipers were the first thing I had to fix ... it's pissing here the whole time

 

I was putting it off and finally decided to do it.. Ill be shipping the car to hawaii in a couple of weeks so I have to make sure all the little odds and ends are finished.

I also:
-repainted my engine bay
-installed my reverse lights
-cleaned up my tail pipes with some paint stripper so they were shiny again.
-carpeted my trunk
-cleaned the hell out of the car.

Ill make another post to highlight what else I need to do..
