Default Too much power?

im getting kind of scared of my motor build up. forged 347 roller with nitrous. n/a gonna make around 350, plus say 175+ shot of n2o? getting close to 600 wheel horsepower and that sounds crazy. im used to 230ish wheel horse.

whats my weakest link? rear end was said to be good for 450. no idea about the toploader 4 spd or even my driveshaft.

You should go with the big shaft 428 style trans, big universals, and 31 spline 9" rear. You'll also need to modify the rear suspension to avoid wrapping the leaf springs.

Horsepower does not kill parts, but torque does. What are your torque numbers?

The stock toploader will not take more than 300-350ft*lbs. David Kee can build you one that will handle some decent power, but if you get too big, you are looking at a Jericho or Lenco. 2+2 is right in that you can go to a BB input shaft to help. You will need to make sure you have a quality output shaft or it will twist. A single disc clutch on the street will never hold 450+ft*lbs. You need to get a dual disc. I really like my McLeod RST. It is a little noisey, but holds the torque well. The stock 9" will handle more than stock power, but I would think about 31spline axles and a nodular center section if you are playing with more than 450ft*lbs. The 1310/1330 ujoints are junk. If you are playing with 450+ft*lbs convert to the 1350 ujoints. You will also need to strengthen the frame and suspension or you will twist it the car up pretty good. And that is just the rear end and drive line. If you plan to run juice, I would rip all the fuel system out and start over with an pair of electric pumps, regulators, and -10 lines. I could go on, but my point is you pretty much have to rebuild the car to play with 500ft*lbs or more. Ask me how I know.

Something you can do on the nitrous to help limit your parts bill from breakage is to only apply the nitrous in higher gears. Do not launch with it or use it in low gear as that is when your tranny and rearend has the most mechanical advantage and is applying the most torque to the tires. Think of the nitrous as a compensator for higher gearing.

If it never hooks you wont break much, but Urban is right about using nitrous only in 3rd and 4th, you will find in the lower gears all it does is make the tires spin harder. 600hp/tq at the wheels isnt too much, you can never have too much power. You can however need heavier stuff behind the flywheel. I dont even consider a manual for engines over 500hp, they break too easy. Still you should be ok on the motor, but it never hurts to beef things up.

I doubt it will hook if you stand on it. Cant fit much tire under a 65. Welcome to the traction limited club.

Hahaha...Limited Traction Club...I like it.

I am running MT Sportsman S/R tires 26x10.5 on the back with sizable suspension and traction mods. I plan to chassis dyno Whiskey in October, but I guess I am planting 400+ft*lbs at the wheels. Before I had my RST clutch, I would just smoke the clutch if I tried to launch from a stop. I did a full launch and pull on the street the other day to see how things were feeling. I hazed/slipped the tires for about 50' but did not smoke them before it bit hard and and ripped through the four gears. I might could hook it on the track, but probably need MT slicks or at least ET Streets to keep the tire spin to a minimum. If I launched with a 150 shot, I would just explode the tires, but if they did hook, I would twist the car up. There is a reason why you run tube chassis. FYI, when I ran stock suspension and stock tires, it would just hop in place and smoke the mess out of the tires which is terrible on your car and performance.

i only plan on using the nitrous in 3 and 4th. im gonna launch on slicks (8.5) on the motor and spray afterwards.

blah i may take this down a notch.

you'll be fine, you don't use the nitrous all the time and if you follow the above mentioned recommendations about not hitting it off the line your drivetrain should hold up pretty good.

Talk it down a notch? Thats crazy talk! You want more power! MOAR POWA!!! You havent lived life until you have built a 600+hp/tq engine and put it in something under 3000lbs, then driven it around scaring old ladies. Pieces of brick should be falling off buildings while you cruise, otherwise go buy a Civic or a minivan.

Sure that much power breaks things, but that is the fun. Find the weak links and make them a non weak link. Even at the power level you are on the motor, you should consider some subframe connectors, they make a huge difference in how the car drives.

Dont make me shoot another video of my street/strip car, I will do it if you persist with this less power, take it down a notch silliness! Urban should shoot one of his car doing a street tire launch, just stand on it from idle man!
