Default Terrible Turning Radius

I bought my '67 convertible in March. It has original equipment power steering. The car has horrible turning radius when turning to the right. Why would my car turn left about twice as sharp as it turns to the right?

I'm considering all options concerning my steering system. If I knew something in my steering system wasn't working properly, I could fix what's wrong. This would be by far the cheapest option.

I'm considering switching to Borgeson power steering box. That would eliminate a lot of the power steering components, plus I would no longer have to worry about header clearance. However, it would cost me in the neighborhood of $900 to do the switch because I'd also have to buy a rag joint, steering shaft, and drag link from a manual steering set up. This option might be considered expenive since I know I could buy all new "original set up" parts from Chockostang for less than this amount.

I'm also considering a power rack and pinion set up. They're at least double the previous option. I've heard pluses and minuses about the rack. Better road feel.... worse turning radius (on most).

What to do, what to do?

Betcha some fool put the wrong power steering cylinder in it, or the one you have has been damaged by the headers.

Maybe the alignment is way whacked out and the gearbox isn't on-center so the ram is partially maxed out to one side?

Have you looked at the tie rod adjusting sleeves to see if they are close to the same on both sides? Take a look at the pitman arm with the wheels straight and see if it is centered.

Have you put the front of the car on jack stands and actually seen that it turns farther one direction than the other?

All the above comments have validity.

Another problem can be the Wrong Centerlink.

We have seen about every screwed up Power Steering you can Imagine.

Folks putting 67-70 Mustang Center Links on 67-69 Fairlanes, and Vice Versa---These are Totally Different, which does exactly as you are experiencing.

Putting 67 68 69 Mustang Center Links on 65 66, A No No Will not work.

And of course, the Granada thing, putting these darn things on the Mustang, Fairlane, all Years as some think "They are all the same" ---Positively not.

Bottom line, the Factory, Year/model Correct Power Steering Systems are FAR Superior than the Ill fitting, Very Poor turning radius of homemade, made up Rack systems being sold.

Did you ever get your turn radius problem corrected.
Do your wheels hit both the left and the right steering stops?
