Ok this really gives me some good ideas, thanks for the responses. My long term goal is to put a fully balanced and bullet-proof bottom end in this motor and then full mechanical roller cam. That'll put me up in the 7000+ rpm range where i need to be to make peak horsepower, maybe even 8000 rpm. I've got another 289 and a 351 windsor I could drop in while I'm working on this motor. I think though even with the low 300's horsepower with the 4-speed and gears I've got this car will be fun to drive. Thanks again.

heads are too big, intake is all wrong, and the carb is too big. also why didn't you get the bottom end balanced?

Maybe you guys can give me a ball-park figure on what horsepower I'm going to have. I've got the following
-302 standard bore
-line honed mains
-squared and surfaced on the top of the cylinders
-balanced roataing assembly with a standard 3 inch stroke
-hypereutectic pistons
-solid roller lifters
-.561int/.563exh lift (accounting for the 1.7 ratio roller rockers)
-1971 351W heads w/ 1.90int/1.56 exh valves
-RPM Airgap Dual Plane w/ a 650cfm double pumper
-full length tri-ys
-Accel electronic distributor and coil

-i have the Grant woodgrain wheel and my button falls off too (less 10 hp)
-loud exhaust
-and to top is off kickass blue led engine compartment lights

Why are you building up the 289 for a 69 Mach when you are sitting on a 351W? A 400 HP build with a 351W is so easy a caveman could do it.

I do agree with you about the 351W. I have the original 69 Windsor motor. I got this 289 cheap and it was already built up and ready to run. The 351 has close to 100k on it and could stand to be rebuilt. The 289 had a forged steel crank and good pistons in it and I got it for next to nothing. A guy had a Maverick he'd set up for 1/4 mile and had a few runs on it and he ran into some hard times and parted it out for cheap. It's possible that bottom end already is balanced, I was just saying that I'VE never had it balanced. Hell I may end up taking the 289 out and putting it in a little fox body and thrashing it at the drag strip and building up the 351 to put back into the Mach 1 someday.
