Default I need help

I got N OLD 68 Mustang from my brother he had just bought a new car and decided he didn't feel like working on it anymore, and i have free time so i decided i would be glad to take it. It has a brand new 302 engine powersteering a/c everything. the problem is when i start in up and put it into drive it will accelerating on it own. It isn't a little bit either it has gone up to about 30mph with out me touching it. i have to fight to get it to stop. when i turn it off the lights stay on and i have to pull the battery. It never did this when he had that i know of he took me driving in it all the time you would think i would have noticed it, but anyway can anyone help me figure out what's up before i break this car.

lots of things it could be but one thing to just check is the throttle return springs assuming the new 302 is still a conventional carb motor. They may be worn or possibly not hooked up correctly. COuld also be something involving the idle advance or timing. When in park, how does the car idle on cold start vs warm start?

No ideas on the lights but sounds like some sort of electrical glitch which can be a hassle. Hopefully someone will have ideas on that one.

Easy fix. Either the idle is set to high, or the fast idle on the choke is sticking, or set too high. Do you have the factory service manual? Not that cheap junk from the auto parts store. It'll show you how to fix this.

Stuck accelerator? Check the linkage to the pedal under the dash, make sure that nothing is binding it there, then procede to the engine compartment and make sure nothing is touching the linkage. The return spring may have loosened and the small bracket that supports it may even have spun on the bolt. If that is working then I'd start with the fast idle screw.

Lights? The light switch may have shorted out , I've had this happen myself. It's easy to replace. You can actually google some of these problems and find several answers that will allow you to troubleshoot.

If not, keep posting, someone for sure will have dealt with it before.
