(when installed with the trans completely against the motor, there should be a gap between the flexplate and the convertor.

Spent many hours looking for wrenches dropped into the black hole. (they ain't cheap) Don't leave drain pans under car either....wrench will find it.
when you put the converter on to the trans by hand...not talking about the motor at all here...when the converter is fully seated it will not wiggle up and down...besides the point though ive installed my AOD plenty of times and motor as well....I know how to seat the converter properly

Thumpin I could possibly be that noobish but no I did not forget the block plate =)

I had to ask. I don't know what your experience level is. Wasn't trying to step on a nerve. Does the convertor have a drain plug? Without seeing it, I'm out of suggestions. ....flexplate backwards???

Have these EXACT parts been used before? In other words, same flexplate, bellhousing, converter? If it's a new flexplate, is it the wrong diameter and jamming into the bellhousing?

When they DO hit the floor, it's absolutely a given that they will bounce, slide, roll, or whatever right to EXACTLY the middle of the car so that you have to pretty much get down on your belly and slide under the car to retreive it. Same with bolts, nuts, spark plugs, etc. I think that it's a law of the universe or something.

This isn't always true... I too have done numerous trans/converter swaps, too many to count, and I thought the same way you are about the converter. Well, there is an exeption to every rule, so I found out. I had to change the trans in my lifted bronco ( 12" lift and no jack to lift the trans high enough to bolt it up) and I had this EXACT same issue. It ended up being the converter wasn't all the way engaged.

I agree with the rest of this advice here. Check the converter again even tho you're sure that you did it right the first time.
