Restoration Advice
I just bought a '66 mustang and I want some advice on how to go about this. We already replaces both floorpans. We still need to do the right fender apron, trunk floors, at least one quarter (right), right inner/outer wheel house. You would not believe the issues this car has. They replaced the floorpans using a piece of sheet metal screwed into the old one. The replaced the quarter panel by cutting out half of the old one and laying the new one on top and GLUED it, not weld. The brake fluid was brown as mud. it's so screwed up. I'll try to attach pictures. What color should i paint it? it was originally gold.
66 had an antique bronze poly. Is that your original color. What color is the interior? Going original on the color is always nice unless you hate it. I would really need some pics to give you any restoration advice.
You got more to worry about then what color you want to paint it at this point.
Well, We bought a '65 coupe basket case and I don't need the work you do but I'm doing a full frame off, I guess you can call it that, restoration/cleaning.
Are you driving the car and restoring it along, or is it going to be down for a while while doing so?
We set a goal of 5 years that ours will be done, because my wife will be 50 that year and it will be the Mustangs 50th birthday as well. That is two big reasons and motivation to get it done.
Since mine was already torn down when we got it I took it down even further and decide to literally go from front to back during the restoration/cleaning process. I got the front frame all cleaned up and ready to paint and now I decided to go underneath and get everything cleaned up leaving all what needs to be welded last, which isn't much. I just have to put in front pans and and patch a toe board.
I will then move on to the replacing the full cowl, driver rocker panel outer, and patch the inner. Then next will be the tail light panel and trunk support followed by the quarters.
From there on I will move on to getting a rolling chassis back under it and have all brake work done. then I move on to electrical followed by body and lastly interior.
That is my plan as far as now and will probably change done the line when I realize it may not go as planned during the process.
My point is you got to set goals and sit down and think of what needs to done and what sequence so that your not tearing into things more then you have to.
Your budget is also a big factor. We don't have a lot of money, but we decided to get a small $1000 revolving loan that we can use, pay on, add to it, and reuse as needed. We will also use a portion of our tax return as well year to year to get big items. As I said we set a 5 year goal, I hope to make it and beat it.
Good luck and I would love to see pics.

welcome to the world of RESTORATION GONE WILD! During the build of my 66 coupe, I found it had been hit from the rear. So far, yr and a half later, qrtr, trunk, trunk lid has all been replaced. Guess it comes with the territory.
It will probably be down for a few months until this spring when i finally get to drive it. Me and my dad are restoring it right now. The door tag is gone so i can't give you exact but it was for sure originally gold (It is now red, but we still have to paint last guy sucked at working on cars). It has black Standard interior (bucket seats) with console. It's a straight six automatic 200 cub/ins. Right now now we are working on the quarter panels the guy cut out half of them and laid the new one on top. so trunk floors, quarters, then fender apron, then cowl, then brakes, suspension, paint, and interior. I'm definately NOT going with gold. I absolutely hate gold if I knew that before I wouldn't have bought it. I thinking Candy apple red, raven black, or wimbeldon white. thanks for the feedback. I have one pictures on my profile
basic rule of thumb I saw on the web was 1) get it mechanically sound, so you can drive it,,,, 2) go after the exterior/body work/paint and the 3) go after the interior,, kinda makes sences to me,,cause there will be slight differences as you go along as sometimes things over lap
As another 66 owner with a car that had been incorrectly fixed after being wrecked, welcome. You can go to my photobucket page and see what i'm up against. anyway, Marti will build you another door tag if you feed him the info. (he did for me anyway). Regarding the color, your suggestions sound good. For me, I'm going after the light ice blue color found on the new Ford Edge cars. jlg

Thanks for the tip Jlg2002, I saw the photos of yours. It's pretty rough were kinda in the same boat though so good luck. As for paint I want to keep it authentic for the most part but the blue is nice.
