Default Need help ID rear axle

When i bought my project, this rear axle came with it. When i put the axle in, the 4 U-bolts didn't fit. The size of the U-bolts are 2.25" and the axle tube is 2.75". So i was thinking, did the preovioous owner gave me the wrong axle?

This project is originally an 6 cyl. the guy i bought it from also had a 67/68 fastback lying around in pieces. Could it be that i have his 8 cyl axle? It would be nice if it were so, that guy screwed me over. He said it was a complete car expect for the windshield. You gotta love Karma.

The tag saids:
WCZ-V 0AA
.79 8 930A

My axle chart says that is a 67-70 Mustang 8" open rear with 2.79 gears. They are generally considered "V8" axles.

In general, 6 cylinder Mustangs got 4 lug rear axles and 8 cylinder Mustangs got 5 lug rear axles.

Yup.

But that doesn't fully answer the problem. The 64-66 all used the smaller width U bolts, and the 67-73 all used the wider pattern, whether they were 200 cid or 428 cid.

To solve the rest, we'll need a photo of the outer end of the axle, showing tube diameter and space between the spring and brake plate. Of course, it would also help if we knew what year the project car was.

This is the 64-66 8" housing.

The project car is an 1970 coupe, it had 5 lug drums all around. According to the Kevin marty report, it had a 250 6 cyl with C4 trans and an standard 2.89 axle.

So, is it possible that the 6 cyl cars came with V8 axles?

The WCZ-V stamping says it's a 67 or newer. 66 and down stopped at WCZ-T.

At least that's according to my restoration guide.......

I thought they put 8 inch rears in all 1970's even the I6 cars.
