Default engine block plate

I have misplaced the block plate that came out of my 66 mustang (the plate that goes between the bellhousing and the block)

is this piece really necessary? exactly what does it do?

and where can I get one? (i need a 6 bolt version)

Covers the flywheel so road crap doesn't get jammed up in there. Everybody stocks these new, I've seen a stack of them at Glazier Nolan.

It also acts as a starter shim. Without it you very likely will have problems with the starter engagement on the flexplate/flywheel. You don't need to get one from a Mustang, either. ANY 66 or newer small block or 300 6 cylinder vehicle will have the one you need. You can probably get one from your nearest salvage yard.

Auto parts won't, but NPD? Call Glazier Nolan, tell them you need the 65-67 6-bolt rear engine cover, tell them manual/automatic, and you'll have it in your hand in a few days.

You do realize that as soon as you buy a new one the missing one is gonna show up, probably somewhere you already looked ten times.
