Default Leaf Springs

I am thinking of finally getting around to replacing my leaf springs.

There appears to be numerous options out there just not sure which is best?

I don't really think 5 leaf is the way to go. I've read too many things saying it will make the car ride too stiff.

What I am debating is between 4 or 4 1/2 springs...any thoughts or comments on what you guys have used?

Well, even the 428SCJ had 4-leaf, so it depends on what you plan to do. GN has an excellent "show correct" kit complete with GT springs and all attaching hardware for under $200, which is perfect unless you plan on going to the track.

I went with the GT package from Glazier's. The rear's were 4 leaf GT's. I like the ride. The car doesn't bottom out any more.

I used the Grab a Trak 4 leaf from Mustangs plus. I had no complaints (except taking the OLD leafs out)

The main reason for upgrading the leaf springs from 4 leafs is to combat wheel hop. Is that a problem with your car? If not, then do not get a 4.5 or 5 leaf.

I did have a problem with wheel hop on my car. The 4.5 springs along with CE Slide-A-Link bars helped, but still did not eliminate it.

I installed 4 1/2 leafs (Grab-a-trak I think) with Energy Polyurethane bushings heavily lubed with dielectric grease and didn't have a squeek in over 9mos. of use. With KYB GR-2's the ride is firm w/o being harsh or bumpy, I like the compromise and would do it again. Mines a DD that will see some track time and my wife/daughter ride in it and have no complaints. The new leafs made a huge improvement on the front end plowing while entering interstate onramps, nose used to point right while merging left due to shot springs.

In addition to the number of leafs, you need to decide on the location of the eye on the springs. Different eye locations results in different ride heights.

I have GT 4-leaf, Gas-A-Just and Genuine Traction Masters. No wheel hop at all, even with the 4-speed and 289HP. Funny thing was it actually rode smoother after I installed the TM's.

Don't mean to hijack but I am also about to get new leafs to replace the worn ones in my 69 coupe and this is great info. Anyone who has upgraded there's have a big block? I have a 390 and wondering if I should do the 4 leaf GT or a 4 1/2 leaf for a street cruiser. Also if I want to keep a slightly higher back than front, should I do mid eye or standard eye? Oh and of course who has the best price on the grab a tracks right now? Anyone have sales running on them? I could either just buy the leafs now or go ahead and buy the coils too if the price was right.

I have M+ 4.5 leaf mid-eyes on my car. They're firm, but not too stiff with my Edelbrock shocks. They control wheel hop well (for not having any traction, anyway) and handle decently. If you drive around rough roads a lot or just have a daily driver/cruiser, 4 leafs are probably a better option. GT 4 leafs will ride better and still handle well.
