Lightbulb Curious about HP

Hey im curious about an approximate hp im gonna be running. I have a 66 mustang with an early 80's 302. Just rebuilt but pretty sure its got stock cam and crank. i have an AOD trans with a performer intake, tri y headers. brand new 600 holley carb and an 8 inch rear with 3.00 gears. If anyone has an idea i would appreciate the input. Thanks

Stab in the dark, but I'll shoot for 200hp. Gears would really wake the car up, though.

Its hard to say without more details. Do you know the exact model 302 engine you have ? Did it come from a mustang or another ford model ? You might be able to look up what the original rating on that specific motor was and add a little bit with your mods/upgrades.

probably not looking at alot out of it if it is stock. Maybe 250hp. As mentioned, need more info to give anything but a guess at hp. A good start is to find out what year and model the engine came out of and then you can look up stock hp for that model. I've seen 302s run from as low as 180hp up to high 200s.

get the engine code and I'm sure someone here can tell you what year/model, etc it is from. 80's motor should start with an E I believe.

The 302 2V engine was pretty much the same regardless of what car Ford put in it. They all had lousy exhaust ports, which can be cleaned up quite easily to produce noticeably more power (this is essential if you upgrade the cam or install a 4V carb) and the same lame C3AZ-N camshaft. With exhaust porting, a cam with at least 218° @0.050, and .470 lift, flat top pistons, a 600 cfm carb, and distributor adjusted to BOSS 302 specs, you'll have a surprisingly stout engine, and it won't break the bank.

The only 302 4V was the 1968 J code, but the block was the same as any 2V, so the code probably won't help. The J code heads were unique, that may help. The J code was the only 302 that had flat top pistons.

Don't confuse any of this with the BOSS 302 4V engine, that was entirely unique.

I would guess it has around 200-225. I would swap the 3.00 gears for something like 3.50 since you have an AOD. That will make it much more fun to drive.
