Default Trunk torsion bars

Ok, i have had it, how do you get these things in? I can get them in backwards no problem, how do they go in correctly and hold the lid open and not closed?
I have read almost all the threads here and on other forums but nothing that assists me in getting these thing in with out lots of BLOOD.
BTW i am working on a 68 coupe

Thanks

Mortman

Hated those things! Spent 50.00 bucks on 2 80lb 20" gas struts. Mounted one end of the struts to the trunk structure behind the rear seat and the other to the hinges.

I've seen a few of the vendors selling them for 99.95 for a single strut. look around locally for a place that sells truck caps and you'll pay about 20.00 bucks each. I also suggest putting 2 on, 1 on each side for even pressure to both sides. Mounting can be to the floor or back panel like I did. Struts come in various sizes and you want to measure the open size.. ie iirc I used 20" struts - thats their fully opened length.

If I can find a pic later I'll post it. I originally used 2 100lbs struts and the trunk flew open hard! I returned those and got 80lbs struts and they work great now. Please note that while I do have a fiberglass trunk lid, due to some modifications its damn near as heavy as the stock steel lid so I'd still suggest the 80s.

as a last ditch effort has any one used a removal/install tool such as the image? If so how is it used?

Found one.. not the best photo however you can see how I went. Either way works! The reason I went the way I did is because I have an enclosure being placed between the rear wheelwells below the package tray. With the struts going back they don't interfere with my design. Getting fastened on the floor as MU shows does.

Again.. the 99.95 'kit' MU sells is way over priced! If you want to mount to the floor then open your trunk and measure the distance between the 2 points as you see them in the MU pic. Strut length is measured by the 'open' length. Find a trunk/trailer cap shop locally and buy from there. There are a number of eBay sellers also selling gas struts.

I had to dig out my old laptop hard drive, reinstall it and boot up to get this image. Didn't realize that I hadn't moved these images over to my image server yet. Glad I went looking for this before I dumped or trashed the drive!

Kinda hard to describe, but the springs go right in when using such a tool. The pivot end of the spring slides on the notch on the hinge bracket, and you select which adjustment notch you need on the hinge to hold the lid up.
