Default Side kick panels: maximum speaker size

Hello all,
About a month ago, we bought a nice green 67 Fastback (can't wait ). Currently, it is being prepared to drive (new rubbers, engine redone and repainted, disc brakes, etc.) and will arrive here somewhere halfway through february. For the car we ordered side kick panels with 6.5" holes in them for speakers.
These to be exact. We want to have rather good speakers (do it right the first time), so quickly we came to Pioneer. There only is one problem: the better the speakers: the bigger the magnet, meaning the deeper the speaker will have to go.
So what is the biggest speaker that will fit in that panel? I believe that the panel has a 'bump' in it by itself, so the speaker comes forward in order to make more room, but how much is it? Can the biggest speaker be like 1.5 inches? Or maybe 2.5 inches?
Thank you!

I would wait until you get the panels and then measure to be exact. The other recommendation I would have is looking into component speakers where you have a separate mid and tweeter combo. These are going to be your best speakers as long as you have a good place to mount the tweeter. Flushing it into the panel is a option.

Okey thanks! But where to place the tweeter than?
But even if I do that, I still don't know how deep the woofers can go. I found on another forum that someone measured that the kick panel comes 1.37" forward by itself. But is behind that still clearence like an inch or so? Most (premium) speakers are over 2".

Imho, I 34would not spend much money on speakers in the kick panel. It is such a small space that the sound quality is always going to be lacking. If you want speakers there, cheap pair of pioneers or sonys will do. I'd suggest investing on a pair of good quality speakers for the rear package tray area. They will give you alot more reward for the money invested in good speakers since they have enough air space to project quality sound. For bang for the buck, I would say rear package tray is top priority, door speakers are second and kick panel/dash are tied for third.

I agree with oldrock. you will better off installing them into the door panels. i know some people dont like to cut the door panels but you will superior sound that way compared to the kick panels.I am currently installing component 6" in my doors with seperate 1.5" tweeters.
i had a nice set of 5" coaxial speakers in the kick panels and you could barely here them while driving.

FYI a new set of door panels is only $50 at mountain laurel mustang (if you dont want to cut the originals). they also sell kick panels with 6.5in pioneer speakers already installed so you must be able to get a 6.5in into the space. you may want to call them and ask them what speaker model they use. You can talk to Jason, he always does a good job while helping me. I have bought a lot of stuff from them.

and get some pics of that baby up when you can.

I have put many MB Quarts in the kick panels and they fit fine. Power them with a 50+ wpc amp and you will hear them fine.

comes down to what people prefer. high pitched sounds are clear to tell where they come from, so having kickpanels as the only speakers is not the best of all ideas. I have a combination of speakers in kickpanel and 6x9 in the rear behind the seat.
Out of the rear one you'll get the best sound, since you have room there from the trunk). The kick panel speakers won't be as good no matter what you put in there.
But yes, do wait until you have the kick panels mounted, then measure. I can give you my measurements, but it's probably different again for 64 models ...
For a really good sound in those cars start at the back ...I'd have to agree

mustang unlimited lists those as matching parts for the panels

you could always ask ... ;-)

Agree, start in the rear. Keep in mind that if you go separate components, tweeters are directional, meaning that to get the best use out of them, they need to be pointed directly at you, so that may limit you on how to approach that part (installation). Whereas bass is omni-directional and can be put anywhere as bass is more "felt" than heard due to frequency range. Mid-range can be put just about anywhere as well. Having said that though, you COULD probably put any speaker anywhere and "hear" it, you just wouldn't get the intended benefit (and IMHO a waste of money).

Thank you for all the reply's.
Just a summation:

I should look into (also) placing speakers at the rear, since they sound superior compared to speakers in front. However. Where do I place them?

Is there also like a kit for that as is with kick panels? Or do we have to cut the holes ourselves?

Honestly, I don't think in the door panels is going to be a solution. How good they may even sound. I'll look into the customized doorpanels though.

But to come back to the kick panels, I last found speakers (forgot the brand's name stupidly enough) of which you were able to tilt the tweeters upward. How's something like that for an alternative? Or speakers which have a button you could make the tweeters 3dB louder?
Also it should be possible to fit 2" speakers in as well? (like the MB Quarts).

Thank you all!

@MonsterBilly and everybody else: I hope you can see these pictures :

Definitely comes down to preference. In high school we always did the 6x9 in rear and small up front and I remember many cars sounding great. Audiophiles and show cars the speakers always went in the kicks with custom pods. Much better separation and staging. I understand the larger speakers in the rear idea, but as I learned many years ago, you do not stand at a concert with your back to the stage. You want the sound coming at you from the front, not rear. Get what you can up front which will be the smaller speakers and then the bass goes in the trunk. I got out of car audio years ago, but this was how we always did it.
Most of the component type speakers you can tilt the tweeters and have gain controls on the crossovers.
