Default 65 A/T console help plz

Hi,
I am installing a console out of a coupe into my convertable. I cut the console to fit the convertable hump. My console did not come w/ the shift slide and gear indicator. I bought a nice assembly from NPD. After putting it on and dropping my console into place I have a gap of about 1/4 in. between the top if the gear indicator and bottom of the console shift plate. I can maybe get some it out by shimming. The gear indicator plate is already lower than the shift slide and there will be about a 1/8in. gap there no matter what I do. Can someone with a factory installed console w/ automatic tranny tell me if it is supposed to be a tight fit?
Thanks, Walt

Hi Walt,

no one else was responding so I figured I'd jump in. I looked at the NPD book Pg 29 part#7D443, is that what you got?

Looks like it may not have one piece that you need, but I may be wrong so I'm going to do my best to describe the picture in the service manual to see if you've got everything.

Thinking of the assembly like a Dag-wood sandwich, bottom to top you should have trans tunnel floor, then a seal, then the shifter, the a selector lever plate, then what I believe comes in the NPD kit which is the lower selector lever plate, the slide, the upper lever selector plate, and finally the selector dial housing (pot metal piece of the console).

I think you may be missing the selector lever plate that sits on the shifter housing. It looks like there should be one screw at the top right corner of the piece you bought from NPD that would screw into the plate I am thinking you are missing. According to the picture in the service manual the top left corner of the NPD piece has a nub that sticks down through this plate and possibly a "top hat" fastner holds it in place.

The piece I think you are missing looks something like this
*****edit*****
this didn't work out at all. so I've removed my crappy attempt.

The plate I think you are missing is a thin gauge steel plate that fits flat across the top of the shifter and is raised on the forward and rear end about 1/4" or so. The piece from NPD attaches to it.
Dis regard the "x"s and it looks something like this

Hi Scott,
A plate like what you described is there. It was the plate for the non-console grear indicator and slide that I took out. Maybe I need another plate (raised a bit more) for the console gear indicator and shift slide. Did I make any sense? lol

Yeah, actually I think you made perfect sense.
So the part from NPD had that plate. Looking back at the NPD picture that must be what I see on the right side of the assembly.

Well if you don't get any responses from people with this setup, I'd pick up some aluminum tube and longer screws and make some spacers the length you need.

You know, you might try a P.M. to the lady whose husband wants to take out the console. They may be of help.
