1971 Mach 1 question
Well I just did what I said I would never do, I bought a 1971 mach 1. All my knowledge rests with 67 - 70 mustangs, I also own a '70 mustang convertible. I need some info from you guys that know. Should the front bumper be chrome or color keyed the same color as the car? What kind of package was it that blacked out the hood and included the hood pins/latches? Were some 1971 mach 1's sold without side stripes, rear and front spoilers? What was that package called? Thanks in advance for any info.
The mach1 had a vinyl covered bumper, color-matched. Two-tone blackout was available on the ram air style hood, with or without functional ram air. IIRC, the chrome twist locks only came with functional ram air.
The BOSS style side stripes were optional. Standard was black or argent lower panels with a "mach1" decal on the fender. Front and rear spoilers were actually a rare option. Everybody sticks them on now, but they were not that popular.
Everybody uses magnums now, but the standard dog-dish and trim ring on wide wheels was standard. Note the chrome trim along the side. This is available in repro, now. Strangely, the mach1 interior was optional. Many mach1's had the base interior. What engine do you have? Sadly, the 302 2V was the base engine. Only 4V equipped cars had dual exhaust. The 71 mach1 was available with the 302 2V, 351 2V, 351 4v, and two versions of the 429, the CJ and the SCJ. This was the only year for the 429. The BOSS 351 was a very special engine, but available only in the BOSS 351 model.

The chin spoiler was only factory on the boss 351 everything else was dealer or aftermarket. The best reading you can do is http://429mustangcougarinfo.50megs.com/ and http://www.7173parts.com/
What excellent responses! Thank-you! This Mach I found is all original in a garage in Dallas for many years. It is and H code 351c and has a/c and console. Pewter silver with black interior. paid $6000 but like I said real solid and original, no rust. I want to get the hood blacked out and and the boss side stripe. I like the Magnum 500 look and will probably go with them, Still not sure about the deck and chin spoiler. At least now I know what was available as an option and what was appropriate based on engine and type of hood.
Many thanks!

The 71-73 cars are kinda the redheaded step child of early mustangs. But ford did do somethings good like lower the upper a arm.The steering box is a gm style so a quicker ratio one is easy to get.A lot of cars got staggered rear shocks which helped with traction and handling.Does your car have the 3 gauges in the center of the dash?
I love this because I will end up learning a lot about this purchase. Yes the center has the 3 gauges. I tried to post a pic but could not figure out how to do it. Did some Mach 1's have a deluge gauge package? How do I know if it has the Mach 1 interior instead of just a standard interior?

The mach1 interior was very different from the standard. The dash and doors were the same as the deluxe, with woodgrain all over the place, and sculped, not flat, door panels. The seats, however, were specially upholstered, mach1 only, with contrasting colors and grain.

My 71 Mach1 came with just the deluxe interior package and a/c. It is all origional (including paint), except the
TKO 5-speed and Hurst shifter (it origionally had an automatic).
It looks like the Mach1 package only included special Mach1 seats for the interior. The package also included a heavy duty suspension, sport roof, non-functional NACA hood scoops, tail stripe and Mach1 grill, colored front bumper and Mach1 logos. My car came with black "comfort weave" seats in the same style pattern as the usual contrasting color Mach1 seats. The "contrasting stripes" are dark gray (it almost looks black so not very contrasting).
The deluxe interior package included the 3 guages, dash clock, deluxe wood grain door panels and wood grain in center dash and chrome accents around the guages (but neither pkg included the tach, 3 spoke rim-blow steering wheel, console, black hood, side stripes, spoilers or magnum wheels).
Before you start changing things and modding the car away from origional,
you can get a Marti report to tell you the options/colors the car came from the factory with,
and also how many were built to determine how rare it is.

Thanks so much for all the good info. I have the deluxe interior, a/c, its the 351-2v, fmx trans, 3.00 rear. Thats it, could there be any other options? Can you tell me if the fmx is more desirable than the c6? It has aftermarket wheels. I would like the magnum 500's. Could you tell me the size that would look best ie. 15 x 7? Size of tires?
Thanks!

The 15x7 magnum and the 71-3 Mustang are a natural match.
