Dont forget that the fireproofing (cardboard) behind the rear seat wont protect you if you get rear ended. Your gas tank could be crushed, and the possibility of burning gasoline flying through your rear seat and onto you and the rest of your car is pretty high. Its happened a bunch of times if I recall.

I havn't yet ordered a fuel tank for my restoration. The reason is, it seems it would be so simple to put a real trunk floor down, then suspend a tank below it. I haven't decided if I want to do it the restoration correct way, or the sensible way, but I am surprised I have never encountered anyone that has modified the tank mounting, outside of fuel cell dragstrip type applications.

Rear ended? Never gonna happen. First, they have to catch up with me.

LOL.

If you were hit from behind badly enough to explode the gas tank, chances are in many cases the car would whip you back and forth as you hit the car in front of you. First, severe whiplash which could break your neck as your head gets whipped back over the seat, and then crunch as your head smashes into the steering wheel and/or windshield, killing you instantly. The burning gas is just icing on the cake since you're already dead at that point.

No car is safe, and getting hit at 30 MPH can kill you. All you can do is buckel up, drive defensively and hope for the best.

The getting rear ended and car catching fire is a myth from years ago.I got rear ended in a 65 impala that cars gas tank is same place the mustangs is my bumper dented the gas tank but no leaks or fire. For there to be a fire for being rear ended your hit really hard 50mph or fast,Or you have a old rusted to hell tank that would leak if you kicked it.Any older rwd car the gas tank is right by the bumper only the mustang got the bad wrap of firey death trap. And 60 mins is full of crap they did a story saying the side saddle gas tanks on the 73-87 gm trucks as a fireball too. They showed a crash video but didn't tell people they rigged the truck to blow up.

What would be the point in living if your precious is now dead anyway?
