Default Tint windows while they are out?

Should I use the auto parts store film window tinting to tint my windows while they are out? (rear back-light). Do I take it to the very edge of the glass or window frame? And would it last? If it doesn't, should I wait till I put it back in and install the tint film to the frame edges?
My cougar has had the film installed since 1989. not sure if it was professionally done, but the heat (Nevada) has shrunk it a bit and pulled it in, so it is distorted (view) a bit. It also has some bubbles, not sure if it was installed that way or not since I am not the original owner.
So I was wondering if I install it while the window is out, and it gets installed under the window frame, will it cause any problems? I would really hate to remove the glass again to fix/remove the film.

First rule of tinting, don't buy cheap tint. Get the best tint you can other wise it will either split, peel or turn purple and it will look like a pimp car. Tinting with the glass out only has one draw back, can you get it reinstalled without nicking up the tint? On a quarter window I would say that is questionalble. On a rear glass I would say you would be fine. Quarter glass in not hard to tint in the car so I would do it after it is in. I would not take the stainless trim off to tint it. You won't get the trim back on without messing up the tint. Take the tint to the stainless trim. The tint shops use a black goo stuff around the very edge to hide any tint that came up a tiny bit short. I hope that helps.

i tried that once in a opel manta quarter window. it sounds like a great idea but doesn't work. as soon as you shove some rubber on it the tint will move/crack. have to do it with windows installed. at least that's the only way i ever got it right

First don't buy cheap tint. I would only use Lumar or 3M. If you have to buy autoparts store tint get Gila not that other crap.

You can tint the door and quarter windows on our Mustangs while they are out of the car, but I wouldn't tint the rear glass until its intalled. I would recommend just waiting until its all installed in the car. It would be more prone to leaking then. You tint all the as close to the edge as you can.

First off, I don't think tint windows on a classic look good JMO.
Second, like the guys said, get it done professionally if you are going to do it.
