You can get 390hp out of a 289 and have it plenty drivable, you just have to be willing to spend the money to do it. I'm probably producing around 370-380hp at the crank on my 302 with a ton of torque everywhere, and it could use a better cam. But if I had someone build my engine for me it would be about $10,000.

Modern SAE Certified horsepower is an even more brutal standard, testing in controlled atmospheric conditions of higher temps and lower baro pressure commonly encountered in the real world. A 271hp k-code measured by modern SAE Cert power would be lucky to even produce 230hp.

It's a matter of cost. I know a fellow, who's posted his dyno video on youtube, who used a C9OZ-C hydraulic cam, and I showed him how to port-match his stock iron smog heads. With a Performer plus manifold, and 600 cfm carb, it turned 321 hp on the dyno. Pretty good power for very little cash.

The more you spend, the more you get, but each additional hp costs more. For him, the first 100 hp were easy. The next 100, if he chooses to, will NOT be so easy.

It is a blast to drive and really pisses people off when i get on it. especially when i take it to about 6k rpm's. i feel like a little kid doing something bad.
i built it to bash on it. i tear it up all the time and plan on driving it until the wheels fall off. However, I always want more juice. But i think everyone here wants a little more.
I think there is about 5k into my power plant. i could have put that into a 351 and more but like the fact that it is the original engine.
I THINK it's the original 289. I'm not sure, I'm hopefully checking it out tomorrow (Saturday). Have you dyno'd your Mustang since building it up?

Just curious. As the days go by, I'm becoming more indifferent to the HP rating vs. torque rating, so I'll probably just keep the 289. Meaning I'll have some questions about how to get around 300 HP out of it.

But thanks for everyone's help, too! I'm learning a ton!

Well, like in my last quote/reply, I'm becoming less worried about HP vs. torque. I REALLY like the torque my dad's '04 Jeep w/ 4.7L V8 puts out (but it's 4wd all the time, so that's part of it) while only making roughly 260 HP. Of course, a '67 289 with rwd won't make as much torque, but if I can get it to where it makes around 300-320 lb. ft. at around 2500 - 3500, I'll be happy.
