Go or No Go?
I currently have a 66 mustagn with a 200 straight six Sprint motor. I would like to eventually drop a v-8 in and i have decided that it will be a 289 (the engine has been pulled out and has been stagnant for a bit so it will need a re-build). Anyway i found a guy that is offering me a 5 lug back end, drive shaft , 289 and front cylinders from a 67 mustang conv. for $500.00. Just wondering what people think about this deal and also would like to know if the differential would even fit my 66.
Is there anything special that would make that car stand out as being concours correct the way it is now?
Has it ever been driven by the Dali Lama's second cousin twice removed? or maybe Sid Viscous threw up in the back seat?
if not I'd say, "great deal dude!!!" You've got some of the bigest expenses out of the way right off the bat. Upgrade to some nice power disks and you're cruising in V-8 style!
Good luck,

lmao nope you guys heard it right... he has anothercar he was selling for parts on e-bay... and then i saw at the bottom of the auction that he would include the 5 lug differential, the drive shaft, the front cylinders and a 289 out of a 67 mustang conv he had for an extra 500. So i asked him if the buyer of the car did not take the extra parts if he would be willing to sell them to me for the same price and so he agreed. He was also telling me about another 289 he had and a 3 speed tranny he was trying to sell also.
Don't jump on it so quick. First off, what gears are in the rear end??? If they are 279's, you probably got those in YOUR car already. Wheel cylinders??? Are we talking drum brakes, because I wouldn't put used cylinders back on a car from another car, when they are cheap enough at 25 bucks NEW. And, about the drive shaft, you can get new aluminum ones made for less than 200. You can get a v8 yoke cut and welded back cheaper than that. So, unless the 289 is rebuilt and solid, and the gears are 350's or better, you are getting screwed. Just my opinion, but I would hate to see you throw away that much money for stuff you got no use for.
I'm still a newby at this stuff... where can i find out information about gears and stuff... i want to learn about things like this before i start changin the car around. All i know now is from what i've been told... "you will have to change the backend to 5 lugs and redo the front suspension and convert to disk brakes if you wanna put in a v-8"
If you can touch the rear end, you can tell what gears it has by spinning the tire 1 revolution, and count the times the yoke for the d/s spins. You will have to upgrade your front end for 5 lug, you don't really have to go disc, just better to stop you with. Read the Granada swap they have up top here, and it will answer a lot of your questions. If you're not sure of something, ASK, we are here to help.
When you are saying rearend are you saying just the gears and carrier or the whole housing . The reason I ask is that the 67 and up are wider axle flange to flange . The leaf spring perchs are the same but not the overall width . The carriers will swap out just as long if it is a 8 inch and not a 9 inch rear . There is a website that has alot of good info that is called mustang steve . I would try to talk him down or maybe just buy the motor and do a granada swap and find a 8 inch out of a 65 or 66 .
Good luck I have done a few of V8 swaps if you have any questions . Robert
