Mark the tire at 12 o'clock. Spin it one complete turn. Tape a piece of string at the top, or make a mark at the top of the driveshaft. Count the number of turns the d/s makes during the revolution of the tire. In other words, if the driveshaft spins 3 complete turns during the 1 revolution of the tire, the gears are 3:00's. If it spins 2 3/4 times, they are 2:79's. So on and so forth. It's pretty easy once you get the concept.

are you sure 2 3/4 turns wouldn't be 2:75's?? If i'm wrong sorry i dom't mean to second guess... just seems odd.

Never seen a 275, but they're is a 279 set.
Which is probably what they are, AND, probably what you already have in the car also. If the guy selling them is a Mechanic, and can't figure out the gears, I would mark it as a save, and move on.
