Default just looking for some information...

So i am thinking about buying a classic mustang to replace my fox that i just pulled off the road. The fox runs fine, and my goal would be to take the EFI system off my 89 and put it on a Windsor powered classic. How difficult would this be? Anyone have any good links?

I would also like to take the t5 out of my mustang and use it for this.


Also, does anyone have any suggestions of things to be weary of when i go look at one, I'm looking more for late 60's (67-70) coupes, with 4 speeds and 351 Windsor's or Cleveland's.

The biggest problem with cars in the years you are looking for is a rusted cowl. They weren't painted at the factory. Look up under the dash with a flashlight and feel around the top of the fresh air vents for rust or soft spots. Bring a bottle of water with you and pour it in the grille in front of the windshield, then check for signs of internal leaks on both sides (if the cowl isn't a problem, why would the owner care?). The cowl can be replaced. It isn't difficult but it is not a fun or quick repair. Aside from that, check for rust on the doors. If they are rusty on the bottom, you might be able to get by with a repair. If they are rusty where the hinge attaches, you'll be wanting new doors.

RUST is the biggest thing to look for... as mentioned above. Also check behind the tires on the fenders, quarter panels, wheel houses (can be seen from inside the truck), torque boxes, rear frame rails, etc. Also, make sure there is not too much bondo. Use a magnet to check for thickness.
If you have a good 5.0 in your Fox, you might as well just swap the whole thing into the old car. Newer roller motors will give you more power and are pretty much a bolt in affair. As for the T-5, there are ample conversion kits available, but if you are keeping your 5.0, you won't need much else. Just a crossmember, clutch linkage (and pedal assy if the car doesn't already have one) and maybe a shortened driveshaft. Check the u-joint angles too. You may need to put shims under the leafs in order to get the right angle and avoid vibrations. Good luck!

I don't understand why you want to take parts off of the Fox, if its running great. Is it a nice car or not? If it is, I say leave it alone and keep the classic carbed. My vote is for keeping the classic carbed anyway. You will love having an overdrive transmission though. Thats just about the best thing since sliced bread.

Thanks for the info!

Want to build this car to a fun Daily Driver spec, so the fuel injection and OD are the first orders, then suspension. Are there an alternatives to the leafs, like a coil over/coil conversion? And are there disk conversions for the 9 inch available...might decide to go IRS from an 03-04.

Im hoping to go with the 351 over my 302, just looking for a little more then i'm comfortable pushing through a stock HO block.

There are many coilover setups for the front and 3 and 4 link systems for the rear, though unless you are planning on road racing competetively, they are a lot of money to be shelling out. There are many very good upgrades for stock style suspension that will cost a fraction of the price and won't require any real fabrication.
There are definately disc upgrade kits for 9" rears, or you can get one already setup for around 1000 bucks... which is probably the best and most cost productive way to go.
The 351 will bolt right into your t-5 as well. As far as using the EFI from you 5.0, you'd probably be better off finding an injected 351 to start with.

Awe.....I remember when I started the same way. 89 5.0 with an auto, running 12.50's at the track, and I was board. My addition to the advice already given would be to start with a V8 car so you already have the supporting parts on the car.
