I think I'd rather have 12v operating any automotive relay. Once you aren't using the resistor wire for its original purpose (which I think was to avoid burning the coil out with the key in the 'run' position), the resistor wire really has no further purpose. About the only reason not to remove it entirely might be for back-up purposes if the Pertronix died.
