Default High revs passed threshold.

I have a 67 coupe with a 289 and C4 auto. I dont have a kick-down linkage, but Im not sure if this is my problem. When I push down on the pedal, I accelerate normally, but there is a certain threshold in the pedal where if I push down too far when accelerating hard, the engine revs really high and I dont accelerate. Its almost as if the transmission drops into neutral and I am just revving the engine really high. This mainly happens when floor it or accelerate quickly. But I could just be cruising, then slam the pedal and the same thing happens. When I let off the pedal it goes back to normal, and its as if Im back in gear again.

Im not really sure what the problem is. Anybody know?

Doesn't sound good, whenever that has happened to me (2 cars before) the transmission clutches were fried, it sounds like your trans. is slipping. The clutches get hot and glaze as they're moving faster than they can grip, when you decelerate they cool slightly and the slower spinning speed allows them to grab. Hope I'm wrong, maybe someone will chime in with a cheaper fix. Have you checked your trans fluid with the car running in park hot and level? low fluid may cause this also.

You might read replies on a trans. board like this one:

This post is similar to what I am experiencing.

While I do not have and AOD trans, I believe the C4 is quite similar.

Your tranny is slipping, it slips more when more power is applied, the slipping causes heat and wear. If you can avoid stepping into it, it may last a little longer.

I don't know if the bands can be tightened on a C4 or not, but if so this may buy you some time.
