Default Revitalizing Original Paint?

Hey there,

I have a 1967 Mustang that has got what has to be the original paint job. My Mustang is red, but normally she has about the color of a brick -- dull, oxidized, red. A guy at work gave me this super paint restorer stuff that you wiped on and then waxed over, and it seemed to work decently -- for about three days. The wax held for a few days and then she just went back to how she always is. I don't have the dough to do a really nice paint job, but I feel like since she's an old beauty I should.

So my questions are these:

1) Would it be sacreligous to have Maaco or somebody paint it on the cheap? My buddy's kid is a paint/body guy and he had once estimated $5000 for the high end paint job and to uncrumple a fender from when I bashed up my driver side rear bumper in parking garage.

2) Are there any compounds/restorers/miracle potions that I can treat the lackluster paint with to get more of a shine and for longer than 3 days?

3) A bit off topic of the paint issue, but I do have a dent in the rear driver's side quarter panel from when I backed into the parking garage pillar (executing a three point turn too quickly/trying not to get hit by idiots racing around the parking garage). Is there any inexpensive way to undo this damage???

THanks all!!!

Yikes! Stay away from wetsanding...original paint does NOT have the clear coat for it.

You need a quality rubbing compound and a few hours of pollishing/buffing.

I have nothing agaist macco, they can actually lay down decent paint however the a$500 job is horrific. Its a $500 paint job. You get what you pay for, a single stage paint. Full of orange peel that you cant do anything about. It will then turn dull in two years because theres no clear coat to protect it. For about 1500 they can get you a decent multi stage paint job, $500 more for jams ect.

Can you recommend any brands? A friend gave me some of this one time and I did the whole car a few years back. I then waxed it....it still only lasted less than a week before it started fading...

As far as revitalizing your paint goes, you can absolutely do that. Take a look at the 69 in this thread. Same situation you're in, only blue.

This is what he says got him the results, in case you don't want to try to find it in there...

As far as what all I used on the paint, it was trial and error. The combo that worked best was 0000 steel wool (wet) to get all the nasty stuff off the top. Then 2000 paper (wet), then 3M rubbing compound with a combo of a regular buffer and an orbital. I'm going to use a clear-coat type polish with an orbital very last once both sides are done.
