Default 302/351

I'm going to the junkyard tomorrow to pull a motor to build for my 70 coupe, I want a 351w.

so I'm wondering what the differences between the 2 are.

also what other cars had the 351w with carburetor?

All kinds of 70s and early 80s mid size cars and trucks had 351W's.

A 351 has an inch taller deck than a 302, this makes a 351 both taller and wider than a 302. Not an issue for your 70.

351s and 302 share lots of parts, and a few key parts are not shared like crankshaft, rods, intake manifolds, distributors, a few assorted brackets etc. Essentially a 351 is a bigger 302.

All in all we went with a 351 in the 66 because we kind of fell into the engine for a good price, although you will likely find that the junkyard will have lots more 302s.

Learn parts interchanges quickly and how to visually identify a 302 vs a 351 and the difference between the 351 w and Cleveland.

As for the windsor vs Cleveland, I use the valve covers to quickly identify. All windsors have 6 bolts, clevelands have 8.

Happy Hunting.

I found my 351 by mistake in an 82 mustang gt that someone took the 302HO out and dropped in a used up 351.

after the rebuild, glad I kept it.

Also, don't confuse the 351M/400. It has Cleveland style heads so it could be confused with a real Cleveland...

I'd find a truck block 351 with a roller cam if I were going to do a junkyard motor build up... There are tons out there in EFI form, which are easily converted back to Carb.

very true. I have always looked for the windsor and did not learn the differences between the cleveland and the M block.
