Default Gear

I ordered the new third member...this one to be exact

http://www.cjponyparts.com/product.asp?pn=CE325

It should be here in about a week and a half.

After I ordered it (with 3.55 gears) it dawned on me...won't I need to change my speedo cable gear as well?

If so, where do I find the right gear for the speedometer cable?

Cool

Yess you'll need a new driven gear for you speedo. I picked mine up from a ford dealership. They are common and fit C4s / T5s and probably others.

The trick is trying to figure out what tooth count you'll need there are charts to help you guess close.

Here's what I've figured out so far.

I have 14's for tires.

Just to help figure it out I pulled the cable out this evening and counted the teeth on the gear.

It has 18 teeth.

what color is the drive gear?

use a light to look into the hole...Black, White or Green?

The rim size doesnt matter. Whats important is the total tire height... 25" is stock.

These calculators will help with one that figures out your tire diameter and the other to figure out what driven gear.

I used both the tci calculator (thanks schootchu) and I also used this one

http://www.sccoa.com/faq/speedgr.html

If I assume 7 teeth for the drive gear then I come up with a 19 tooth driven gear.

The gears seem cheap so I think what I am going to do is order both a new 18 and 19 driven gear. I'll start with the 19 and see what happens.

On the plus, the local cops have been leaving out their little trailer lately that posts your speed for you when you go past. Nice of them to help me test my speedo, LOL!

If I punch things in with 8 teeth for the drive gear then I come up with around 22 tooth for the driven gear. I am going to start with the 19 and if things are really out of wack then I might have to order a 21 or 22...
