Default Too much shifter play

So I finally got new tires on the mustang and have been able to drive it a few days. The shifter has way too much play in it. It's a t5 5 speed. is there an adjustment or replacable bushings in it. Haven't had time to pull the shifter boot yet.

pull the boot. the shifter stick is mounted with two bolts to shifter. tighten them. best use locktite. mine loosened occasionally without. probably from vibration

If it's a stock shifter, there are no adjustments. Save up money for a good one! I put a B&M Ripper shifter in it and super tight!

Thanks guys. It feels like there is something loose. With everything else that was changed on this car by the PO i would be surprised if it was a stock shifter. But if everything is tight, I'll look into an aftermarket shifter.

na same with the stock shifter. I bet the stick is loose (the metal rod that you're holding onto not bolted tight to the actual shifter). Common problem

There's also a small bushing at the ball/socket connection at the very bottom of the shift lever. If this bushing is destroyed, it'll cause a lot of slop.

I agree, get yourself a good aftermarket shifter. The stock shifter is rubbery and vague at best. Spend the money on something like a Pro 5.0 or Steeda Tri-Ax. I've used both and actually have a Tri-Ax in my fox body. The Hurst unit isn't that great, and I'm not a fan of the B&M (sorry Randy).

One disadvantage with aftermarket shifters is unless the shifter lines up squarely with the hole, you'll have to chop some floor. Not so much with the stock shifter. I had a similar problem with the similar shifter on my M5R2 trans shifter, and a couple of bucks for a new ball socket ring and it tightened up like new.

The advantages I had working at B&M was getting the modified ones....... I know, mine is better than what was sold but the Hurst and B&M (same company now) have been so mass produced, I think Tad is right.

Odd. My Tri-Ax puts the shift lever in the same spot as the stock shifter.

That's been my experience, too.
