Flashers
Does my 66 convertible supposed to have one or two flasher units? I have info that all 1966 Mustangs had an Emergency Flasher unit in addition to the flasher for the turn indicators. My car has an Emergency Flasher switch mounted inside the glove box that has never been operative since I've had the car and it has a flasher unit mounted under the dash, down near the bottom of the steering column which I believe is the flasher for the turn indicators. I can't locate another flasher on the car. My turn indicators are not operating at this time and I'm just checking everything to try and repair them and ran into the question about how many flashers I'm supposed to have. I'm sure some of you experts out there know the answer.
Emergency flashers were an option in '66. With 2+2's heads up and the Accessory Wiring Diagram you should be able to chase down the wayward relay.
Funny this came up when it did. I spent a bit of time yesterday tracking down my flashers because of my turn signals failing to flash. As mentioned above,my '66 has two, one up by the driver's side air vent above the hi-beam switch (turn signals), and one tucked under the dash between the radio and the glovebox (emergency flashers).
Found the emergency flasher, thanks to you guys. It was really hidden in an area I had not had the pleasure (?) of exploring before. The wiring colors that connect to my E flasher and the flasher on/off switch in the glove box, do not match the colors shown on my wiring diagram. I've got a problem with the switch and maybe a faulty flasher which I will have to work on. I took the switch loose from inside the glove box and it all fell apart but maybe I can do something with it. Just another challenge on a 44 year old car.
Thanks again for your help.

They were mandated by the Feds in February of 1966, I beleive to be required by the 1967 or 1968 model year.
Seeing as Ford was selling 1966 Mustangs in September of 1965...Six months before the mandate... Well, lets just say that in 1966 they were most definitely optional. (that probably explains why they are on Ford's ACCESSORY schematic.)

There were two systems in 66, the early version was connected via a 'jumper' at the steering column, and in a running change, it was later made integral to the under dash harness. The Ford schematics I have seen show only the early version. It is easy to detect which version you have. The early one had the wires attached directly to the switch in the glove box. The later one had a plug on the wires, which connected to the back of the switch.
My 1966 was scheduled for assembly September 29, 1965. I have the invoice right here, and on the right side, there is a list of the standard equipment description which was printed on the sheet, and the last 'bullet' is
• Emergency Flashers
Here is a sample, already on the 'net, so you can't accuse me of tampering:

Well it's hard to argue with that, lest I be accused of accusing you of tampering... It still doesn't explain very original '66 cars I know that have no sign of ever having had flashers, nor does it fit with my memories of 1966.

I really don't know if the E flashers were standard on all 1966's or not but I have an odd situation with mine which makes me think they might have been added later. My E flasher on/off switch is mounted inside the glove box with 2 screws holding the switch mounting bracket to the top of the glove box. There are four wires entering the left back side of the glove box and they are wired into a four way connector that connects to the back side of the on/off switch. These 4 wires are TWO GREEN ONES, ONE WHITE/RED AND ONE WHITE/BLUE. My wiring diagram for 1966 shows the 4 wires to be ONE BLUE, ONE GREEN/RED, ONE GREEN/WHITE AND ONE WHITE/BLUE. The two wires on the back of the E FLASHER UNIT match the wiring diagrem. Maybe this means the E flasher switch was added later with different wire or possibly just rewired for some reason.
When I removed the E flasher switch assembly two mounting screws it fell down in the glove box and fell apart. Does anyone know if these switches are available anywhere? I may be able to put the old one back together but don't know for sure how it goes together.
