Default 351c engine

hi everyone, so ive been doing alot of research on this site and throughout the internet and havent found the response i was looking for so i thought id ask the question myself and see what i get..

My problem is(if this makes sence to anyone) i have no problem rebuilding an engine, if you give me the parts i'll make it work.. i have a problem with the numbers game, ie.. with 9.0-1 compression which cam would work best with that. and if i go with "x" cam which manifold would supplement the cam the best.

I have a 72 cleveland which im wanting to get between 400-425 hp out of it. it not going to be a track or strip car but i want speed and power for whenever or whereever it is i decide to drive it whether it be 200 mi to the coast or to work and back(30 mi round trip). It has the 2V heads and all the info i gathered indicated a 9.0-1 comp ratio. from what i have found, the best way to wake a cleveland is a new cam. and comp cam 270H being the most recomended for (4V) heads. mine is a 2V im wondering if that will work best for my 2v as well... and if there are any other ideas out there to make 400-425+ hp...

thanks for your time

Hydraulic roller cam is best, get a custom ground one and it'll easily make that power. With modified stock 2V heads and a custom hyd roller it could easily make 450-500hp at the crank on pump fuel.

Might want to poke around that site--or join up and ask specifics over there.

don't know much about the clevelands, wouldn't it be a good idea to slap 4v heads and intake on them or can you achive the same with working 2V heads? was wondering that noone mentioned that

Kalli, the 4V heads had such huge intake runners that they can actually hurt peak performance on all but the most radical motors because the velocity of the incoming air is compromised. In many cases 2V heads are more desirable.

Mustang_Garage, welcome and have fun building your engine. If you want some ideas on radical Clevelands, look at the magazine Engine Masters. The Engine Builders Challenge has been won by Cleveland based motors. CHI makes some great heads and intakes.

The more modern versions of the Cleve heads use smaller ports are flow dramatically more. Probably the extreme most example of a modern Cleve heads is the NASCAR approved Brodix-Neal series heads, or something similar.
