AOD Price
Trying to figure out what a fair price is for a used AOD transmissioin from a 1990 5.0 mustang. Found one from a guy and it will to include torque convertor, dipstick, dipstick tube, and block plate. Claims it has 15k miles on it and removed it because they changed to a T-5. Is 300 bucks a fair asking price or should I keep looking? Also any advice to ensure its good and no hidden surprises? It will be going into a 1969 mustang with a 302 which currently has a C4. Thanks everyone.
I found my AOD locally on craigslist. Mine came out of a '92 Mustang LX 5.0. The sell said he converted to a 5 speed. He said it had about 85K miles on it and had been sitting in his garage for a year. It came with the torque converter, but nothing else. I paid $125.
I bought a conversion kit from PATC. The kit included the other parts you mentioned.

With the transmission sitting on the floor, there's no way that I know of to check its functionality.
That link to PATC has a picture on the web page that shows a transmission dyno. I don't think your everyday transmission shop is going to have one of those, but that's one way to check the transmission.
I knew this mine been sitting for a while. It also sat in my garage for just almost another year. I took it to a transmission shop and had them go through it. Fortunately for me, I had a C4 that I was able to sell in order to recoup some of the cost of doing the swap.
The guy that bought my C4 was given the opportunity to come to my house and see it in the car. I wanted him to be comfortable with what he was buying. He crawled under the car and saw no leaks, dents in the pan, etc., and decided to buy it. He came back a week later to pick it up. Even with that, he said he plans to at least put new seals in it.

If the price is under 500 buy it and have it checked at a local trans shop. While there if any problems ask about beefing it up a little. For everything else patc that link up there has anything else you can need.
You get what you pay for when it comes to the AOD.
If I give you one for free, you will pay nearly $1000 for the rebuild and upgrades to make it streetable.
Even then it's for the old man driving his wife to church. Works good for a street/ showcar.
I have one in my Maverick and I like it. I refuse to abuse it because I don't want to swap it out yet.

Thanks for the input everyone, guess I just need to decide if I want to go forward or not. I want to change the gears in the rear end to give me more off the line, but also want to try and save my kids hearing when I have the family out driving.
