Default Paint job

my '66 has been media blasted, any rust repaired and primed. now it is time to paint it.

i am looking for a above average finish ( not Barrett-Jackson level, this will be a daily driver with quality look)

I live in Phoenix, Arizona, can anyone recommend a good auto body shop to complete the finish? Prefer a shop in the east valley, Tempe, Scottsdale, Mesa, Chandler or Gilbert.

Any suggestions on prep prior to painting other than the normal feather, prime and block is welcome...

Also, many people recommended to rino coat the undercarrage and trunk area, to help with road noise. would a good quality carpet undermat accomplish the same thing. i was just thinking about painting those areas, as i would in the engine compartment.

I appreciate you recommendations.

thanks again.

Hey me too. My 66 came back from media blasting a few weeks ago. Everything that will get color was primed with Dupont 2580CR, the bottom got POR15 followed by SEM bed liner. The inside got POR15 followed by Lizard skin.

As for paint, still kicking around House of Kolor Metajuls Prism Effect (very expensive) or PPG in the Cadillac STS Red.

Thats exactly how my car currently looks....i will be painting mine the original white.

I used Variprime and Nason 421-17.

What are you doing with your engine bay? Same color as the car or ????

Thanks,

Engine bay is POR15 + POR Chassis black. I have a ton of pictures that I need to start posting. We've added Spintech subframe connectors and Dynacore torque boxes. I also removed 2 of the vents (at the ends) for the cowl so I could get in there and clean it out and POR the you know what out of it followed by epoxy seam sealer and more POR. The PO took it apart and replace the cowl but it has started rust already.

I went with the epoxy zinc chormate since you can apply body filler over the top of it. It allowed me to get the car protected quickly then spend the time working on the body. And, the primer is bullet proof, I've used it a lot in a marine env and never had any issues. Being a daily driver I need it to hold up.

The car was red so we'll stay with some flavor of metalic red.

btw, this is our first car resto so I'm probably making a lot of mistakes.

If i could afford it, and I lived where you do I would have these guys paint my car...

These guys are amazing.

Like Mr. Velocity, I like the SEM bed liner, it can be tinted to match your paint, it will remain pliable over several years at least, and it is very durable with excellent adhesion. The liner will quiet your car A LOT.

I have used both primers you mentioned, I still use the 421-17, it will build and block really well. I didn't think variprime was available anymore.

Mr. V and JMD, thanks for the info.. keep me posted on your progress Mr. V. The beauty of restoring a '66 is parts are plentyful, not too expensive and fairly its easy to work on.

i going to decide on paint this week, i know that will be a 60 to 90 day process.

enjoy.

Do you have the body suspended by a hoist in your garage? Is it supported by a board and jacks at the bottom? Just curious....

After putting in the subframe connectors I tacked a 1" square tube to them, you can see it in the pick. It sticks out beyond the side of the car about 12" Then just the 2x4 across the jack stands in the front. The come-along is just there to hold it upright, my son and I picked the car up and turned it on its side like that. There are a couple of ropes on it was well to help stabilize it.
