Default Location of Timing Pointer?

I need to time my engine but it's been missing the timing pointer. I recently ordered one and received it in the mail yesterday. Now I'm confused on the location of the pointer. I've heard mixed reviews, some people say it's supposed to be on the driver's side and others say it's on the passenger side. I've got a 71 mustang with a 302, the 302 is out of a 68 mustang.

The only place I can see it going is on the passenger side. There's so much stuff in the way on the drivers side that I can't even see the timing cover or balancer. Anyone else ever run into this issue?
