Default Fuel pump?

Hey guys, sorry its been awhile. The mustang had to sit on the sidelines for the past 3 hectic months of college graduation, starting a new job and moving but the good news is now I am starting to get some cash

I was having a rust issue in my fuel and was running 2 fuel filters and still fouling the carb with crud.

I put the new fuel tank kit in yesterday so that should help fix that. But I am pretty sure the fuel pump is shot from pumping all the rust/gas through it.

I filled both bowls of the carb with gas and she started up and idled like a champ. But after about 45 seconds it shut off and both bowls were pretty much dry.

So basically I think my fuel pump is shot. Anything else that I am overlooking?

Fuel Filter?

And, even if the pump is good, a mechanical pump wont pump well until the air in the line has cleared out. Fuel pumps do not move air well at all.

IMO unless your pump is old, it is probably still good.;

Well, you have a new tank, so replace the pump, and fuel line while you're at it.

Fuel filter is pretty much brand new, it's between the pump and Carb. Fuel never makes it to the filter. Last I checked fuel hadn't reached the pump.

So after it idled for about 45 seconds, and after cranking multiple times it still wouldnt be pulling fuel? Is there a quicker way to get it to pull fuel?

since you've been having problems with rust in the system, I suspect a rust blockage in the fuel line. Like I said, replace the fuel line while you're at it. To test a line blockage, attach a length of rubber fuel hose to the pump inlet, and put the other end into a fuel can. Try to start the engine. If it pulls fuel, and runs without a problem, then there is a blockage in the fuel line.

well the reason I didnt suspect a blockage from the tank to the pump was because i was able to pull gas by sucking on the end of the hose (not a good idea, gas isnt very tasty).

My thought was that if i could pull it through (without trying hard) the pump should be able to pull it through?

And yea it should, especially if you had the gas right to the pump like it sounds like you did.

It only takes a little bit of trash to keep the valves in the pump from working right, so IDK, you might just change the pump, should be fairly cheap for a stock pump.
