Default Does HiPo = GT?

Is HiPo synonymous with GT...or are there 1965 HiPo cars that do not carry the GT badging?

At one time, there were quite a few non-GT K-codes, the 289HP engine was available for a year before the GT was introduced.

The K code was a stand-alone option 64-66.

Many have since been converted to look like GT's, personally I'd prefer a non-GT K code, just to mess with people.

Here's a non-GT K code, demonstrating the rare optional Arvinode exhaust system:

I just discovered this site that shows the cost of each add-on option. This site clearly shows a difference between the cost of a HiPo with and without the GT option. This seems to confirm that the you could have a HiPo without the GT Option.

I guess my post didn't post last night. Yes, you could have the GT option without the HiPo engine. It was available with both the K code (Hipo) and A code (basic 289 4 barrel).

I was going to ask a similar question recently.

How do you know if your 289 is a HiPo or not? There are 289s that are not HiPos right?

Only in 1967.

Very VERY few 289's were the 289 High Performance. The 289HP-equipped cars were serialized with the "K" engine code, i.e., the VIN would be "5F09Kxxxxxx". The engine itself used the same cylinder block as the 2V/4V engine, and the same crankshaft (selected for high nodularity) and the same intake manifold as the 289 4V, but almost every other part was different.

I found another article to support the conversation here. I must say, just when I thought I had a handle on the varieties of the 65 mustang I discovered yet one more. I continue to be amazed at the number of options that were available for this vehicle.

The option and accessory list was amazing. Even this list is incomplete.
