Default transmission input shaft

can someone verify that a c4 automatic transmission for a 66 mustang gt has a 24 spline input shaft? i need to make sure so i can get the right torque converter because i know there are 26 spline input shafts, but i think those are for later models. thanks.

Default RE: transmission input shaft

hi caballo, that would really depend on your transmission. i've got a c4 too, but the numbers on the cover plates on either side, and the number on the id tag, were 3 different years. these parts are interchangeable for all C4 tranny's, so the only sure way to know what year your transmission was built in and thus to know how many splines your input shaft has, is to take the oil pan off and look at the numbers on the brain of the trans. and the vacuum modulator. ( or take the tranny off the engine and count manually).

however, i do know that mine is from 68 and for that year it's really difficult to find torque converters and shift kits. i do believe that TCI makes one though...

hope that helped.

well, i was able to count the notches on the old torque converter and there are 24. unfortunately the one that was sold to me has 26 splines and is apparently for years 70-82.
