Does the type of kickdown you get depend on your transmission or engine? For instance if you have 2 different years for tranny and car/engine which do you go with? I got a cable but I think I need a rod. if I get the rod do I get the rod for the year of the car/engine or the transmission?

69-73 always had a big "S" rod, regardless of engine type. It should match the engine and trans.
