Hi, I noticed that my ignition switch moves when I start and turn off the car. I am thinking something needs to be replace but I can't get the switch pulled out. Can anyone tell me how to take this switch assembly apart?

 

You have to remove the lock cylinder, then the switch can be removed from the back of the chrome bezel, which will then fall off. There should be a cup spacer and spring between the switch and the dash. If they are there, and the movement is slight, don't worry about it.

 

Do you just twist the lock cylinder until it comes undone?

 

Nahh, that'd just break it. Is anything missing?

 

OK, do this.

Lay a towel on the steering column.
Remove the instrument panel, disonnect the speedo cable, and lay the panel to the left of the column.
Examine the switch to see if is installed properly, with spring and spacer.
If it is, put the instrument panel back.

 

wonso the switch is not that hard to remove. If you have a 65 Mustang the instructions can be intimidating, at least if I try.

But here goes:
First buy a new switch now. It will save you an Excedrin event at a most inconvenience time latter on…
1: Disconnect the battery
2: Disconnect the battery
3: Insert ignition key in and turned to ACC position.

4: Using a paper clip or a hair pin insert it into the small hole below the key: With the paper clip pushed in turn key to the left and pull key. Cylinder should come out easy.
5: Place a soft towel over your steering column.
6: Pull your instrument cluster out and lay it on towel. You may have to work it a bit. I mark each wire with a number and the same number on back of panel.

7: Remove odometer cable. Lay cluster out of the way..
8: Now you can access the back of the switch. Apply pressure on the front bezel and with your other hand reach in apply some pressure and turn the cup clockwise as you face it.

It is spring-loaded and should come off easy.
9: Replace with new switch you have already bought in reverse order.

I have replaced 2 switches in my 65 Fastback. Here in this hot climate the switch has a tendency to come apart at the back. Poor manufacturing?? Your first clue is a loose key. If you do not replace it soon, not to worry, one day you will end up with an electrical short or the back of the ignition switch laying on the floor.

That ant all bad unless you happen to be at ya favorite Home Depot parking lot..
I know it sounds intense but actually it ant all that hard.

I'm not convinced anything is wrong. Since his complaint is "the switch moves" I don't see how a bad switch could cause this, or how a new one would fix it. If the spring is missing, or the spacer, I'd expect to see plenty of movement, but then that's what he'd need to buy, not a switch.

 

can you spin it all the way around, or is there just play?

 

I don't think anything is wrong either.

Just need to remove the switch and reinstall it.

If they don't get installed right they can develop the problem described. Ask me how I know...

 

Thanks for all the posts! I haven't had any problems with it only that when turning the key the ignition bezel moves about 1/2" both ways and I am worried that over time it's going to ruin the paint on the dash area. So I should just uninstall and reinstall and maybe that will work. Nothing looks to be missing it just moves a little.
