Default Alternator with more power needed - SD5-3U

I have a 1966 that was originally a 200 I6. I had a 302 from a 1984 Mustang put in. A big electric fan was added since it needed better cooling. Now I need an alternator with more amp output to recharge the battery while I have the lights on and the fan running.

I'm trying to figure out what alternator to buy (and where). The current alternator has this stamped on the bottom: SD5-3U.

I would consider a Ford 3G alternator conversion. I believe there was a recent post about someone doing exactly that. Do a search and I'm sure you'll find it.

I talked to my engine builder he said it would take rebuilding half of the electrical system to put in some alternators. So, is there a way to upgrade the alternator to one that produces more amps but would be an easy swap?

powermaster 140 amp one wire alternator or summit racing 100 amp or similar chevy one wire alternators modified to fit a ford, they get rid of the stock voltage regulator and just one wire hook up, the only downside is you must rev the engine to 1500 rpm to turn the alternator on.

Default Alternator

I don't think I can depending on revving the engine each time I need to have the alternator turn on.

Just like htwheelz67 said, I put the Powermaster 140 in and I think it'll power a small city!

one of these will work ok, you wont need a phd in electrical theory to hook it up either, 1 wire to the = side of the solenoid will do the trick.

I am of the opinion that a good 3 wire is better, but a 1 wire is good enough to work just-fine..

On a one wire alternator, the alternator needs to spin up to about 1,500 rpm for it to "start up" but then it will charge till it stops. Pretty much a moot point though, because most alternators are so over driven (belt ratio) that they reach 1,500 rpm at engine idle.

Jin has that one in the 66, it works great, I didn't see any Sumitt brand alternators on my last search. (posted above).
