I need help identifying my transmission
Ok I bought a transmission from a speed shop a few months back and the guy told me it was a c4 from a 67 rebuilt and all that. Now i went to put the tranny in the car today and ran into a problem so I have some questions. Now the Id tag is missing from the transmission so I have no way of finding out the year.
1. What year did they start to use electric kickdown's on a c4?
2. My tranny has a long center hub that hits against the crankshaft so the torque converter does not match up against my flywheel
3 My other question is whether or not torque converters are interchangeable? So if i found one could I just throw it in there?
Any help would really be appreciated I am totally stuck at the moment.

So far as I know, the C4 NEVER used an electric kickdown, certainly not on any 64-73 Mustang. The center hub of the torque converter is supposed to enter INTO the crankshaft.
Hmmm… Tell us more about this "electric kickdown".

ok so at least I know what it is now. I know its hard to go off pictures but got any guesses as to what year range it might be? Idk what years had a kickdown and a neutral safety switch cuz I have to get another torque converter but idk what year this tranny is
AHHHHHH now I get it
no. there's nothing wrong with your torque converter. the input shaft in the transmission just popped out.
I have circled it in your picture. the inside fell out and usually a plate falls into the back of it preventing you to push it back in.
you don't need a new torque converter you need to put the input shaft where it belongs. It has to go as far in as that the 'gear' for a better word (i'm not native) of the inner shaft just ends where the outer starts.
i'll post another picture ...
once you have that right, you can put the torque converter into the box (you have to match the input shaft, the outer shaft and the tabs. so keep twisting and turning until it popped 3 times. Then bolt it up to the flywheel. sounds like you bolt it to flywheel and then try to shove the c4 on. that will not work

Dunno about the trans, but the kickdown is not a 67. The 66-68 trans had a much smaller lever that stuck upward.
The washer that kalli is talking about is a thrust washer. Don't push too hard cuz it'll bend it. If need be, turn the trans on the tailshaft and wiggle from that point. It'll fall into place that way. Also right, make sure the converter locks in "3" times, the input (small shaft that fell out) the stator (big splines) and then the 2 tags on the converter HAVE to engage into the pump. From the looks of your "step case C4", it looks like a mid to late 70's, you can make sure by removing the pan and the number on the valve body will tell you. They made C4's from 64 to 86. Ford also made 3 C4 converters which are NOT interchangable!!!!!! The 24 spline from 64-69 then went to a 26 spline which is a stronger trans. They also made a "flaircase" C4 which they put into trucks and vans. The stepcase "car" had a dipstick into the case and a 10.5" converter bolt spacing and the flaircase "truck and vans" had the dipstick into the pan and had a 11 7/16" converter bolt circle. I know, hope I wasn't too long winded. Too many years at B&M I guess.
