Toploader 4spd shifter trouble
Hey guys I'm new on this site. I have a 66 coupe 6 to 8 conversion.I have a 69 302 with a 66 toploader 4spd. I just installed the engine and tranny the other day and I have noticed that the shifter is 2" to far forward in the hole in the floor. Talked to a friend and he said it might be the wrong tranny for the car. I decoded the tranny on DavidKee toploader website and the tranny came out as a 66 Fairlane tranny. This tranny has all the same deminsions as a mustang so no fitment issues, but the tranny shifter is still to far forward towards the engine. I was wondering if the shifter linkage could be different and if there is anyway of telling. I am new to the mustang hobby and lets just say the curve has been very steep. Any help here would be great. Thanks Phil.
Has nothing to do with the year of the car. The 67-68 BB cars used Fairlane transmission, which gave the production-line cars the same problem you had. The solution, rather than make special transmissions, was to add a plate between the trans and shifter, moving the shifter to where they, and now you, need it to be.
