I have some emotional interest but I dont want to get neck deep in a hole (been down that road).

I am not a welder and would have to farm this out. I have someone I have used before and has done an excellent job. I wanted to get a sense of magnitude of what would be involved and a guess of the cost.

Dude, if you're saying you can get a 69 fastback complete, from the original owners, for $3K, what looks like in original condition, for $3k???? Why don't you have this car already?!?!?

Rust is rust, it can be repaired. Trust me, I know. I'd be all over this car. Cars like this go for $8k+.

If you are saying 3k for the car I would say that is a great deal. Rest of it looks in really good shape, especially all the stuff that can nickel and dime you to death. Go for it!

Buy it...or I will

Half these cars need some sort of torque box work. So in the end yours may be a bit more then most but really whats the difference. If it can get you into a complet FB for $3k you'd be crazy not to. Hell you could cut the front end off the car completely and still sell the back for $3k.

Being I just spent $5K for a 67 convertible with more rust than that, I would have to say "buy it". If you take care of the rust and make it safe you'll be way ahead of the game if you can do the repairs.
Looks like a great base for a car, but just be aware that you will have to do some work.

Ok, thanks guys. I started the day reading the earlier posts thinking I'll pass, I dont want to start another project that is a disaster. But reading your later posts, I feel better. I know its going to take some work to get back on the road.

Originally the car was just going to be given to me but with times the way they are, I wanted to give my family member something.

I'll do a search through the posts to see if I can learn more about repairing this. Once I get the car back to TX and have it up in the air, I can get a better sense of the extent. I'm sure I'll have more questions.

Thanks!

PS A white 69 Mach 1 was just featured on Mecum.

THe car is a bargain, the thing about Mustangs is that the parts are freaking cheap, I don't think there is another marque of car that has a wider variety of affordable parts.

Mustangs are SIMPLE cars, real easy to work on, they don't suck a lot of time even when starting from the ground up.

My guess is that the rust on the car is going to have some fairly substantial rust, but so what.

I am not saying that if you restore it you will ever get every dollar out you put in, but if you are careful you might. Hell, even if you buy it and then decide you don't want to mess with it you could likely turn it over and come out even or better.

A couple years ago lots of rough fastbacks were selling upwards of 10K.... (yea I know things have changed some)

I would inspect every sq inch for rust to determine what can be patched and what to replace. Would be nice to see belly, under carpet, under trunk mat, under doors, etc.
Looks like paint is old enough to reveal panel rust.

I would inspect fit of all body panels.

Must determine if you can spend the time to complete restore.

Big commitment.

If you don't have loads of time could be better off selling car to one who has time.

Buy it, $3k for that car is a helluva deal. Wish I had family members like yours.
