Default Poly bushings

Just bought some poly bushings for the rear leaf springs and someone told me to lube them when I put them in. The bushings did not come with and lube and I am wondering what can I use? Do I have to by special grease?

You probably don't have the heavy body grease that will work best laying around so you might want to consider buying a small tub of it. Open gear and chain lube will work the best but any kind of grease is better than none. If the bushings are not lubed they squeak - worse than the rubber bushings.

There's special teflon grease for those bushings, you can prolly get a tube from summit etc for cheap.

I put Energy Polyurethane bushings on my new leafs front & rear eyes. The tubes that came with them were tiny, not enough to lube the 'liberally' as suggested. After doing some searching I summized dielectric grease appears to be the same composition as the stuff sold with the bushings. I found a large tube at my local O'Reillys for ~$10 and it was plenty to lube them up, never heard a squeek for the year I drove it until i tore the motor down. The chemicals looked, smelled and felt identical (both sticky as hell to get off your fingers).
I wouldn't use any grease with a petroleum base, I've read it breaks down the poly.

Ok, now I am totally confused. Just got off the phone with Mustangs Unlimited and they tell me the "bushing kit" that I ordered is not going to squeak. I am question that as they are polyurethane made by Energy Suspension.

They also told me that the front of my leaf springs have a pressed in original bushing that needs to be heated to take them out and replaced with the new ones that are left and right side.

Is this true. I am not available to look at my car right now as I am out of town.

What is the best way to get the old ones out (40 years old) and the new ones in.

Maybe I should go with just plain rubber bushings?

Sorry guys, I am a rookie at this!!!!!!

I have the energy suspension from mustangs unlimited and I can promise you...THEY SQUEEK without lube.

Its a great setup, the poly is tighter then a nuns....nevermind. Just lube them. (Works for nun's too)

I think we've got a concensus, WITHOUT LUBE they WILL SQUEEK. Lube them liberally if you use them.

I removed the stock front eye rubber busings with a threaded rod, a couple washers a short piece of pipe and a few nuts, it's not hard or rocket science. I'll have to dig up a pic of it. You simply use the washers slightly smaller than the inner diam. of the spring eye bolt and a piece of pipe the size of the spring eye. As you turn the top nut the washer forces the bushing out of the spring eye and through the center of the pipe. Bushing slides right out eventually.

If you're not worried about the 'give' of the stock rubber bushing compared to the poly which gives less and allows less flex of the leafs then leave the stock ones in and sell the poly's or send them back.

Someone please keep tcrote and his lube away from the nun's....
Jon
