Default 9" axle bearings & narrowing ??

Does anyone have a 8" or " Ford axle out and handy? I need a measurement on the width of the axle bearing.

I noticed the axle bearing protruding from the flange when it's seated all the way in the housing. see pic below. This doesn't seem normal. Also notice how the bearing retainer is bent. My bearing measures .842. I'm curious if the bearing is too wide. I installed the axle in another housing, and it protrudes just the same.

Getting ready to narrow the 9" in the Chevy II. It currently measures 58 1/2" axle face to axle face and 53 3/8" flange to flange which means there is a 5 1/8" difference between the two Not sure if that's a correct figure and if it's possible the bearing width is throwing it off. Logic tells me the difference should be 4 3/4" ( 2 3/8 plus 2 3/8 brake width each side) instead of 5 1/8.

Not sure the year of the 9", but it's 28 spline, small bearing, small flange old mustang style with a 2 3/8" measurement between the axle face and edge of the bearing.

Thanks in advance

Not sure the picture will show, but I'll try

I have mine in the trunk of the car to get new ones installed today, but I don't have my calipers.

Call Currie, just ordered my seals and bearings from them. Great phone service.

I have large bearings so it may not matter anyway

The reason the bearing is sticking out is because you don't have the drum brake backing plate installed. Once it is installed, everything will be fine.

The brake offset for a small bearing 9" axle is 2 1/2".

Doh!! That's it! I didn't take in account for the brake backing plate.
I feel like an idiot.

The brake drum is 2 3/8" measuring the width of the machined surface the shoe contacts.

With the axle out, measuring the distance from the edge of the bearing to the outer axle face it is 2 3/8"

With the axle in the housing, the measurement is 2 3/8" from the backing plate to the outer axle face.

With the axle in the housing, no brake backing plate installed, it measures 2 1/2" from the housing flange to the face of the axle.

Does that mean my brake offset is 2 3/8" or 2 1/2" ??

Almost all small bearing axles were 2 1/2" on the brake offset. There were a few 2 1/4" brake offset early 8" axles, but not many.
