Default Help! On 65 Automatic to Manual Conversion

Hello all,
I am new to this forum and I have been doing a lot of research on the internet trying to decide where to go with my mustang. Last year I put in a manual valve body and B&M ratchet shifter in my C4. It worked great but the B&M never really "perfectly" matched the detents in the valve body. Needless to say I think it’s starting to slip. Instead of messing with this anymore and completing a rebuild on the C4, I think it’s time to put a manual in it. I would like to do the T5 conversion due to the ease of it and I am running a 289 bored .30 over and slightly modified. I believe it’s around 275Hp, but I am really not sure in the future I would like to get it between 300-350. I do not know what torque I currently have, but I am sure it’s within the WC T5 range. My question is how much does this conversion usually cost, I mean I would like to keep it around 1000, but I guess it will depend on the price of the used T5. Do you guys think $1000 would even be feasible or am I way off? Thanks for the help it’s greatly appreciated.
Henry

ehh all said and done probably closer to 1300 to 1500 like you said it really depends on the trans...did it seems great A WC cobra spec trans for 300 bucks but then you find it needs syncros.. so you pull it apart then you find it has beaten down slider dogs on 1st and 2nd. So you spend 400 on a master rebuild kit and another 200 or so on a 1st gear 2nd gear a 1&2&reverse slider but hey now its as good as new and since you did the work you saved a lot of money and it still cost like 400 less than a new WC cobra spec.

Then of course there is the Drive shaft issue... Too long?? dont mess around...Denny's damnit!!

Thanks Gun Jam, I now am reading and seeing a lot of people around 1200-1300 I think I could be able to pull this off with the wife but we will see. I guess the biggest debate is going to be a hydraulic, cable, or manual linkage clutch system. Does anyone have any views on this?

I'm a big fan of the OEM mechanical linkage. I've used it on T5's, works very well, and my own 4-speed car has nearly 400,000 miles on it with very little maintenance. Reliable enough for you?

Do more searches on this forum. $1300 is leaving no room for error and you probably could do it you trade you C4 for a fox body T5.

The Costs:
T5 conversion Kit (From CJ Pony w/ late model bell housing): $250
Cable clutch/ Hyd Clutch: $200 - $600
Flywheel: $100 - $150
Block to tranny plate: $30
Clutch kit w/ hardware: $150 - $200
Shifter Ball and surrounding hardware: $100 - $300
Clutch pedal W/assembly rebuild: $100 - $175
Drive shaft shortening/ or new drive shaft: $150 - $200
Trans fluid: $25
Speedo Gear: $10

If you are shooting for $1,300 the price list above is already above $1,000 and that's not including a tranny. You could probably sell your C4 for a couple $$$, and might be able to pick up a used t5. I tried to go that route, but see my other posts about the issues I had. It ended up costing me a new engine too. Do your research, this forum has a lot of good stuff.
