Default transmition blues

i am buliding a 65 fastback for a 351w I picked up. looking to get 550+hp natural out of it. i did some swapping for the motor with a c4 or c5 on it but i have a c6 also. i really want an all around car launch, corners, and cruise a couple hundred miles too. have heard good and bad about AOD and would really like the overdrive. anyone done anything like this?

That's some serious power. You are going to want a Tremec TKO for that kind of numbers. 5 gears not enough? Viper T56..

A Tremec is clearly needed with that kind of HP but it sounds like he doesn't want to make the switch from automatic. Even if he did, the 65 and 66 Mustangs require a fair amount of tunnel modification to make the swap.

I love my aod. It was a pretty easy and inexpensive swap.. the most cosyly part was the crossmember. And if i had known that it fit as crappily as it does ahead of time i would have just modified mh old one. I mah still do that for exhaust routing purposes.. my long tube headers are reall close to the mount so i had to go to a 2.25 intermediate pipe that opens back up to 2.5. So go with either stock manifolds, shorties, or a differnt trans mount ogher than ron morris.

thanks for all the input guys. I am trying to stay automatic. I broke my neck in the army and some days my right side doesnt work as well as it should. 5 speed is fine six is better but not nessasary. I have the car down to bare metal now so any tunnel changes now is the right time for it.

I'm doing a 4R70W in my 66. From the research I've done, the 4R70W has stronger gears than an AOD but if you're able to get both you can swap the gears into the AOD so you don't have to buy a controller.

Not sure why people are saying tunnel changes. I spoke with a guy that put a 4R70W into a 66 vert and didn't have to modify the tunnel. I know tomorrow, doing a test fit with my 5.0 and 4R70W with a Ron Morris cross member.
