Good luck with the crossmember.. if i were to do it again i would just modify my original.. keep you exhaust in mind when you test fit it
Got the trans in, cross member is just on the studs of the mount since I couldn't find the nuts. Need to align the motor and get the trans down the center of the tunnel but all in all there is no doubt that a 4R70w will fit into a 66 without the need to modify the tunnel.
A Tremec is clearly needed with that kind of HP but it sounds like he doesn't want to make the switch from automatic. Even if he did, the 65 and 66 Mustangs require a fair amount of tunnel modification to make the swap.
I have had a few "discussions" about this on here, but by dropping the tranny mount about 1", no tunnel mod is needed for a TKO....
But back on topic, I am sure an AOD can be modified to take 550 HP.
Give Jay a call at Broader Performance for a good price on a wwell built AOD and see about a constant pressure valve body - that way you have no need for the throttle valve cable.

I can see how the cross member could be an issue with an AOD. The AOD is 22 5/16 to the mount while the 4R70W/AODE are 23 5/16. The extra inch gets the cross member far enough back to clear the tunnel support (or whatever that piece might be called that is welded into the tunnel). If I were doing an AOD I would modify my current cross member. But with the 4R70W is fits perfect, tight but perfect.
