sure i hope santa brings me an aluminum 3.5 ratio 9" one day.

for the mean time i'm running oem 8" rear and am satisfied.

can change the gears quick and easy.

handles decent power.

quite operation.

have seen entire oem 8" axle assemblies less than $80 a few times.

have a spare that was almost free.

i kinda like idea that tire will break free b4 over stressing drive train.

can't seem to justify posi trac for my driving style.

The whining is most likely from the backlash not being set correctly. There is actually a little bit more to assembling a rear-end than just putting it together. If you purchased the parts a competent shop could assemble it properly, including setting the backlash.

Any luck with getting what you wanted? I ordered a 8" posi on ebay for $325 brand new. There's a ton of them on there for $325. They are a Yukon unit. I got it in 4 days. He also sold me the oil, friction modifier and all the bearings and seals, all for $420 (including posi). Just dropped my 3rd member today. Will bring it to a shop for them to install the posi in the casing then I will install it back in.

I'm considering upgrading the rear in my '66. I currently have a warmed-over 289-4V/C4 and 2.80 gears in the 8 in. I'm just looking for a lil' more get up n' go. Would I probably be more satisfied with a 3.25 gearset or 3.55? I might do a lil' highway driving here and there.

He did at first, but I haven't tried yet since he stopped communicating via e-mail. I will be calling him tomorrow and Monday, so I can say I did my part to communicate with him. At this point, I would rather just get my money back.

I have always had a hard time trusting deals on e-bay or any website where I made a significant purchase such as this and now I have even less trust... I like to see the part and have it in hand the moment the cash leaves my possession.

i hear ya.
i also like 3.27 and 3.55.

my 67 is pretty torquey and i get by alright w/ 3.08.
my 64.5 does ok w/ 2.79; good off idle torque.

gear set is only $188 fwir.
but gas is on the rise.
