Default 1969 drivetrain

Soon I should have a mild 351w and I currently have my old c4 trans that I'd currently with my I-6 250 and it needs to be rebuilt. Should I rebuild it or find a AOD trans or AODE trans? I'm somewhat hard on my cars when I drive them but not always. I don't want a high reving motor while I'm cruising on the freeway though that's why I was looking at a AOD or AODE trans. Right now I have a 3.50 9" trac lok rear end but I can always sell that or change the gearing if I had to. What do you guys recomend for a mild 351w in a 69 coupe?

I'd say get a 428 super cobrajet and C-6 with some 3.91 gears.

428 hmmm aren't those expensive and hard to find? I wanted to do a 408w later on but a 428 sounds nice

I put an aod behind my mild 351 and i love it. Im running 3.00 gears at the moment and it still gets up pretty fast.. on the highway it just cruises. I have some 3.70's in the garage in another 3rd member with trac lock waiting to go in. The aod was ghe cheapest route to go for overdrive but the aode is supposedly a better built trans. With a begter and stronger gearset which you can swap in if wanted. You would have to figure out how to connect the computer portion of it for it to shift though. But after fighting with the tv cable on mine it would probably be just as easy, agrivating, and expensive to do the electronic side of the aode.

Thanks for the reply boogerschnot did you have to build the trans to take the power from your mild 351w? What is the TV cable I keep hearing about? I'm not putting a television in my mustang what was so hard/expensive about the electronics? Does it bolt right up to the 351w? I like the feedback you have about the AODE so I'm very intrested in it plus they don't look very expensive. Thanks again

get neither the AOD or the AODE....go for a 4r70w they are computer controlled like the AODE but they have way better gear ratios and they are stronger.... pull one out of a v6 mustang 99-04 http://www.becontrols.com/

what else besides the 4r70w trans, tourque converter and the OptiShift would i need to buy? does it have to be from a mustang V6 or can it be from other cars within those years? would it bolt up to the 351w? im guessing its strong enough for a mild 351w thanks alot guys

I used an original aod out of a 93 GT 5.0 and did nothing to the transmission to make her work with my 351. The fmx flexplate that i originally had on the car fits the bolt pattern of the aod so i reused that, changed the block plate to the 5.0 block plate and then purchased a lokar throttle valve (tv) cable, which acts as the kickdown cable by changing the internal pressure according to throttle position. Without the tv cable the transmission fails. Also picked up a trans crossmember for the swap and a new u joint to adapt my driveshaft to the transmission yoke size. It all cost me around 300$. Mostly because i bought the 5.0 and trans together for $200 and sold the motor alone for $250 after taking what i needed. Not a bad deal. I had to modify my shifter rod to fit the new trans though. It was easy as bending it a couple of times and attaching a bolt to one end.

4R70W from 3.8L V6 Mustang or 4.2L V6. Mine came out of a 2002 Van with a 4.2L 6. The trans is 23 5'16 to the mount, thats 1" longer than the AOD. You'll either have to fab something or buy a cross member, I went with a ron morris unicross. I'm planning on having a driveshaft made since the overall length is longer. There are pics in my redstang thread.

I read something lately about not needing a TV cable if a constant pressure 'doohicky' is used on the tranny.
