Another engine and tranny combo thread....
So I'm not the first and I'm not the last, I find it hard to decide on an engine for my '68 coupe. I've bounced back and forth, originally wanting to use a 289, then a 302, then I picked up a chevy LM4 325 small block with intentions of a budget high HP build, but I'm not sure yet again. I think I'm leaning more towards the torque side of things. I still want respectable HP, but I'll face the reality that most of my fun will be at green lights or a drag strip.
So where should I go? 302? 351w? 351c? other suggestions?
Here's some of my requirements:
-My engine budget is about $500-700, very low I know but I really don't have a lot of money for this. My whole car is being built off a high school budget, why do you think I'm doing everything I can by myself?
-Again, it seems that torque will benefit me more than HP, but I shouldn't be the judge here, you guys tell me
-I've learned a little about engine rebuilds, and I'd be happy to try one myself
As for a transmission, I really want a manual so a T5 seems like the logical choice. However, I've noticed both GM and Ford T5s, and I've seen people use them interchangeably, what's the difference between them? I searched and never found a for sure answer. Help here would be appreciated.
However, I've got two C4s, and C4s are apparently easy to rebuild, but what should I do with them? Rebuild them for practice and then sell them and hope to make a little to fund a T5?
Or should I stick with a C4 and a stall converter upgrade or something? I was recommended that method by a friend who drags his '66 coupe. I kinda like this route too.
Thanks in advance for any advice and help. I appreciate it!

if you could get a 351 cleveland for under $700 i would go that route but that could be a one man crusade, the 351w would definatley be more common and cheaper for speed parts, thats my two cents, and dont put the 5.3 in it, thats just wrong
I found a 351w for $200. The seller said when it gets warm the oil pressure goes down some, but a rebuild is in line anyways so that should be taken care of. Will probably be going with it. It's $200, comes with a Holley 600 4 barrel. Obviously I'll need to rebuild it, but I may take that chance to put in a new cam and a few budget upgrades. Already got a 4 barrel intake as stated.
It's 2 and a half hours away, but I think it's worth it.

Sorry, I didn't word that right, he said when it gets warm the oil pressure goes down some. But like I said, I'll be rebuilding it anyways so that should solve the issue. Assuming I do get this engine, I'm sure I'll have a few questions for the master engine builder Mr. Velocity.

Just kidding dude...... I couldn't resist. I would definitely go this route of the 351W if it was available for that price.
Me though...... I am too stubborn so I am going 289.....with an AOD from a 89 Stang.

Werd
NO NO NO.... you got it all wrong. You need to take the V6 200 I have off my hands, and I am willing to trade it for that 351w of yours.

And the 289 with an AOD sounds like an awesome cruiser to me!!!
