Default Instrument cluster fit problem question

Does anyone else have problems getting the cluster in and out? I just bought a new bezel and lenses and first of all it's such a bitch getting it in and second it won't sit flat enough to make a smooth transition to the heater controls.

I think part of the problem is the slight warp in the dash pad, but I certainly don't remember my 68 giving me so much grief.

Has anyone been through this? Has anyone trimmed the pad behind the bezel?
Vaseline? K-Y?

I don't want to butcher the new bezel trying to wrestle it in like the old one.

i don't think i have any warps, but i do know that it's a bitch to get out. took it out to replace the stock bulbs and now there's a rattle from the cluster that won't go away lol.

The bezel holds the pad up. Don't get crazy, but basically you need to make sure the pad knows who's the boss.

The pad is winning. I know that Mid County Mustangs must have had problems with it because there were about 8 washers per screw behind the heater control piece. They had replaced the bezel back in the early 90's and that was their solution to make the heater controls flush with the bezel

I cannot seem to push the inside corner of the dash pad up and in enough to get the assembly in easily. I though about warming it with a heat gun and molding it in some. It is really difficult as it is right now. Maybe it would be better to wait for really warm weather.

I trimmed my new pad and heated it. Fit like a glove, nice and flush after that.

I am assuming that this is the original pad, but it might not be. In any case where did you trim for the cluster to fit?

Warm weather, or heat gun should do. Either way, those washers gotta go.

I installed LED light kit in my 67; the bulbs are bright and should last forever.
Nice to have clear instruments at night; love it.

Makes me nervous every time I shoe horn that tight plastic instrument cluster out.

I have original dash and it is stiff; new one would be softer.

Agree with others it would be a little easier in the sun on a hot July day.

Cold and dreary here. Garage still hasn't come due to the snow on the ground in surrounding parts of the area, so I will wait a while before trying to get the new cluster in. I did however get my new steering wheel installed. I will snap a pic of it tomorrow.

While cluster out its time to consider LED, volt meter, oil gauge, etc.
